Acute Sarcopenia: Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis on Its Incidence and Muscle Parameter Shifts During Hospitalisation

open access: yesJournal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle
Background Acute sarcopenia is sarcopenia lasting less than 6 months, typically following acute illness or injury. It may impact patient recovery and quality of life, advancing to chronic sarcopenia.

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Resisting ‘Weakness of the Will’ [PDF]

open access: yesPhilosophy and Phenomenological Research, 2010
I develop an account of weakness of the will that is driven by experimental evidence from cognitive and social psychology. I will argue that this account demonstrates that there is no such thing as weakness of the will: no psychological kind corresponds to it.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Bedrest alters respiratory muscle strength in patients immobilized due to fractured femurs

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Physiotherapy, 2000
Bedrest produces decrements in the functioning of all physiological systems. Physiotherapists treat patients who are managed with Thomas splints following fractured femurs. The patients are generally compartmentally treated as orthopaedic patients.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Research progress on weakness based on comprehensive geriatrics assessment

open access: yesHuli yanjiu, 2017
It reviewed the definition and model of weakness and weakness index based on comprehensive geriatrics assessment,so as to carry out the correct assessment and grading for weakness in old people, and take the comprehensive health control measures to delay ...

Metronome-guided Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation with Visual Feedback for Fall Prevention in Elderly: A Randomised Controlled Trial [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research
Introduction: Elderly individuals over the age of 65 years are vulnerable to falls in the community and at home. Fall prevention strategies help reduce the risk of falls by improving muscular strength and efficiency.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.
