A 10-year trend in piglet pre-weaning mortality in breeding herds associated with sow herd size and number of piglets born alive

open access: yesPorcine Health Management, 2021
Background Piglet pre-weaning mortality (PWM) is one of the biggest problems regarding sow performance and piglet welfare. Recently, PWM has increased in some countries, but it is not known if there are similar increases in other countries, nor whether ...

Individual piglets' contribution to the development of tail biting

open access: yes, 2011
Conflicting hypotheses exist about the contribution of individual pigs to the development of a tail-biting outbreak, but there is limited quantitative information to support or dismiss them.

RORγt‐APCs: The New Masters of Oral Tolerance

open access: yesBarrier Immunity, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Oral tolerance is defined by the hypo‐responsiveness of our body to fed antigens, and its failure can lead to immune‐mediated diseases, such as allergy, chronic inflammation and autoimmune diseases. Decades of research have demonstrated that antigen‐presenting cells (APCs) promote oral tolerance by inducing regulatory T cells (Tregs) and/or ...

Factors Influencing Reproductive Performance in Austrian Sow Farms Challenged by Reproductive Disorders

open access: yesVeterinary Sciences
Many piglet-producing farms are facing poor reproductive performance, yet their characteristics remain poorly understood. This study aimed to identify factors contributing to reproductive disorders based on information easily identifiable through an oral

Complement C3 mediates adolescent social isolation‐induced hippocampal synaptic deficits and sex‐specific emotional dysfunction

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Medicine, EarlyView.
Adolescent social isolation disrupts hippocampal function and exacerbates emotional symptoms, with sex‐specific patterns, as shown by human studies. In mice, social isolation decreased hippocampal synaptic density and calcium signaling, upregulated complement proteins, and activated complement‐mediated microglial synaptic phagocytosis.

Effect of Laminaria digitata dietary inclusion and CAZyme supplementation on blood cells, serum metabolites and hepatic lipids and minerals of weaned piglets

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
Seaweeds, such as Laminaria digitata, are a sustainable alternative to conventional feedstuffs for weaned piglet diets, improving their health and mitigating environmental impacts. L.

Construction of an O2‐responsive engineering bioreactor for enhanced indole‐3‐propionic acid production and deoxynivalenol detoxification

open access: yesResponsive Materials, EarlyView.
An oxygen‐responsive living bioreactor was engineered via interspecies protoplast fusion, converting oxygen from an inhibitory stress into a programmable signal for sustained indole‐3‐propionic acid (IPA) production. This genetically encoded bioreactor enables robust aerobic operation and therapeutic efficacy of deoxynivalenol detoxification in vivo ...

The response of weaned piglets to dietary valine and leucine

open access: yesAnimal, 2017
Valine (Val) is considered to be the fifth-limiting amino acid in a maize-soyabean meal diet for pigs. Excess leucine (Leu) levels often occur in commercial diets, which may attenuate the effect of Val deficiency because of an increased oxidation of Val. The objective of the present experiment was to determine the effect of increasing concentrations of

Effect of butorphanol in combination with xylazine during castration of calves: A randomised trial under field conditions

open access: yesVeterinary Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Background In horses, cats and dogs, the opioid butorphanol has been proven effective in management of visceral pain and for peri‐ and postoperative pain relief. The aim of this study was to evaluate physiological responses and indicators of noxious stimuli when adding butorphanol to xylazine for sedation of bull calves during surgical ...
