Do not let thermal drift and instrument artifacts deceive high‐temperature nanoindentation results. We compare classical Oliver–Pharr and automatic image recognition analyses across steels and a Ni alloy to quantify these effects. Accounting for artifacts reveals systematic softening with temperature, while Cr and Ni additions boost resistance ...

Wear mechanisms of PVD-coated PCBN cutting tools
The wear characteristics of PVD coated (TiN, TiSiN, TiAlN, and AlCrN) polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) cutting tools were compared to those of uncoated PCBN during single point turning of case hardened steel 16MnCr5.

Current Status and Challenges in Data Collection for Aerospace Coatings Deposited by Plasma Spraying
An innovative approach has been integrated into the GRENAT project to optimize plasma spraying and coating performance. Raw materials are accelerated and melted in the plasma generated by torches, creating coatings. Monitoring sensors collect process data which are combined with ex situ characterization data.

Exploring wear at the nanoscale with circular mode atomic force microscopy
The development of atomic force microscopy (AFM) has allowed wear mechanisms to be investigated at the nanometer scale by means of a single asperity contact generated by an AFM tip and an interacting surface.

Scandium (Sc)‐doped AlCoCrFeMo HEA coatings are fabricated via flame spraying with 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 wt% Sc additions. Among these, the HEA‐Sc0.3 coating exhibits the highest corrosion resistance, indicated by a more positive corrosion potential and lower current density.

Behaviour of shot peening combined with WC-Co HVOF coating under complex fretting wear and fretting fatigue loading conditions [PDF]
This study investigated the fretting and fretting fatigue performance of tungsten carbide–cobalt (WC–Co) HVOF spray coating systems. Fretting wear and fretting fatigue tests of specimens with shot peening and WC–Co coatings on 30NiCrMo substrates were ...

Reproducing wear mechanisms in gear hobbing : Evaluation of a single insert milling test
Gear hobbing is a widely used method in industrial gear manufacturing. The most common type of hob is made of homogenous HSS and protected by a PVD coating.

Aluminum and nitride coatings are used in industry because they are hard, resist wear, and protect against oxidation. Adding boron can improve friction behavior and other properties. This study tests coatings on surfaces with different finishes. Results show smoother surfaces perform better, while rough ones wear faster, although coatings can reduce ...
