Open Web Awards

open access: yes, 2008
Voting has begun for the second annual Open Web Awards. PS:  "Open" here seems to mean nothing more than openness to voting by anyone.  The award categories include sports and fitness, celebrity and gossip, and dating and romance.  All right.  But why not a category for science and scholarship?  (There are a few scholarly nominations in

ATG4B is required for mTORC1‐mediated anabolic activity and is associated with clinical outcomes in non‐small cell lung cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The relationship between anabolic and catabolic processes governing lung cancer cell growth is nuanced. We show that ATG4B, an autophagy regulator, is elevated in lung cancer and that high ATG4B is associated with worse patient outcomes. Targeting ATG4B in cells reduces growth, protein synthesis, and mTORC1 activity, demonstrating a new relationship ...

Calculation of Contraction Coefficient under Sluice Gates and Application to Discharge Measurement [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The contraction coefficient under sluice gates on flat beds is studied for both free flow and submerged conditions based on the principle of momentum conservation, relying on an analytical determination of the pressure force exerted on the upstream face ...

Evolutionary dynamics of the chloroplast genome in Daphne (Thymelaeaceae): comparative analysis with related genera and insights into phylogenetics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Comparative analysis of chloroplast genomes from 14 genera of Thymelaeaceae revealed variation in gene content, ranging from 128 to 142 genes, primarily influenced by IR expansion/contraction events and pseudogenization of ndhF, ndhI, and ndhG. Two large inversions were detected within the large single‐copy region, including a synapomorphic inversion ...

SmallTalk: a novel small‐sized fusion tag for peptide expression and purification

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The SmallTalk fusion tag allows for the efficient expression and purification of soluble recombinant proteins or peptides in Escherichia coli. Testing with SmallTalk‐GFP confirmed that the proteins were soluble and folded correctly, while SmallTalk‐Bin1b maintained its antimicrobial activity against various bacterial isolates. This streamlined workflow

Flexural behaviour and design of modular construction optimised CFS beams with circular web openings

open access: yesCase Studies in Construction Materials
Modular Construction Optimised (MCO) beams, cold-formed steel sections with rigid hollow-flanges tailored for prefabricated floor systems, require clear guidance when incorporating large unstiffened circular web openings (>38 % of clear web height). This

Enzymatic degradation of biopolymers in amorphous and molten states: mechanisms and applications

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This review explains how polymer morphology and thermal state shape enzymatic degradation pathways, comparing amorphous and molten biopolymer structures. By integrating structure–reactivity principles with insights from thermodynamics and enzyme engineering, it highlights mechanisms that enable efficient polymer breakdown.
