On the torsional stiffness of closed-section web stiffeners

International Journal of Mechanical Sciences, 1965
Abstract The restraint against buckling provided by the torsional stiffness of closed-section web stiffeners is examined. It is shown that the resistance to rotation of the edges of the panels is appreciably affected by the flexibility of the section in its own plane, and that the wavelength of the buckling mode affects this reduction in stiffness ...

Bending tests and finite element analysis of lipped channels with complex edge stiffeners and web stiffeners

Journal of Central South University, 2017
In order to study the bearing capacity and stability behavior of cold-formed steel flexural members with complicated sections, a total of 12 specimens divided into 6 groups were tested, including 3 groups of pure bending tests and non-pure bending tests each.

Stiffened shear webs: post-buckling failure of stiffeners of less than critical rigidity

The Aeronautical Journal, 1979
The buckling coefficient for a conventional shear web, reinforced by a series of equally-spaced transverse stiffeners, is practically independent of the flexural rigidity of the stiffeners provided this exceeds a certain critical value. The stiffeners then provide conditions close to simple-support (if they are of negligible torsional stiffness).

Transverse stiffeners for plate girder webs—an experimental study

Journal of Constructional Steel Research, 1984
Abstract The paper describes nine tests on two large-scale, transversely stiffened plate girders. The objectives of the tests were to determine the ultimate load capacities, to study the modes of failure and, in particular, to investigate the behaviour of the transverse web stiffeners.

A design space representation of stiffened shear webs

The Aeronautical Journal, 1978
A stiffened shear web, consisting of a thin plate (referred to simply as the web) attached to longitudinal members (or flanges) and supported by a series of transverse stiffeners, buckles in a mode involving both the web and stiffeners, at a shear stress which also depends on the restraint between the web and flanges.

Behaviour of Stiffened Web Plates Subjected to the Patch Load

1992
This paper gives results of numerical analysis on the web plates subjected to a patch load having a horizontal stiffener. The Dynamic Relaxation Method is used for the numerical method. Patch length and the support condition of upper edges of web plates are adopted as parameters, and relatively larger patch length is used.

Influence of Stiffener Thickness and Rivet Position upon the Effectiveness of Single-Sided Stiffeners on Shear Webs

Aeronautical Quarterly, 1964
SummaryThe paper presents the results of an experimental study of the buckling of transversely stiffened shear webs when the stiffeners have a thickness less than that of the web-plate.It is shown that the effectiveness of such stiffeners is greatly influenced by two factors, the ratio of the thickness of the attached leg to that of the web-plate and ...
