A design space representation of stiffened shear webs

A stiffened shear web, consisting of a thin plate (referred to simply as the web) attached to longitudinal members (or flanges) and supported by a series of transverse stiffeners, buckles in a mode involving both the web and stiffeners, at a shear stress which also depends on the restraint between the web and flanges.

Stiffened shear webs: post-buckling failure of stiffeners of less than critical rigidity

The buckling coefficient for a conventional shear web, reinforced by a series of equally-spaced transverse stiffeners, is practically independent of the flexural rigidity of the stiffeners provided this exceeds a certain critical value. The stiffeners then provide conditions close to simple-support (if they are of negligible torsional stiffness).

Longitudinal webs or spider bars are often placed mid-span of a motor shaft and are primarily used to support the windings or rotor laminations while allowing sufficient space for cooling air flow. When subject to a torque, the radial webs experience a loading configuration that includes bending and torsion while the base shaft experiences pure torsion.

This paper gives results of numerical analysis on the web plates subjected to a patch load having a horizontal stiffener. The Dynamic Relaxation Method is used for the numerical method. Patch length and the support condition of upper edges of web plates are adopted as parameters, and relatively larger patch length is used.
