Removing Oxide Layers and Retaining Oxide‐Free Steel Surfaces by Polishing in Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, the efficacy of wet mechanical polishing under an oxygen‐free atmosphere for deoxidation and the retention of an oxide‐free steel surface are elucidated using X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The methodology proved successful; however, the results were highly dependent on the preparation of the solvents used to clean the samples after ...

Performance of concrete with and without crystalline admixtures under repeated cracking/healing cycles

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2018
The present paper analyses the repeatability of self-healing capacity in fibre reinforced concretes, both autogenous or enhanced by the addition of crystalline admixtures.

Dynamic Testing of Cold Gas Sprayed Bipolar Plates–Porous Transport Layer Coating System in Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Through direct application of porous transport layer (PTL) on the bipolar plate (BPP) with thermal spraying, the interfacial contact resistance is improved. With the cold gas sprayed BPP–PTL coating system, a proton exchange membrane water electrolysis cell with a cell voltage of Ucell = 1.9 V can be operated up to i = 2.5 A/cm2 in a dynamic mode ...

STUDY ON REINFORCEMENT OF SPLITTING TIMBER BY DRIVING WEDGE TEST

open access: yesJournal of Structural and Construction Engineering (Transactions of AIJ), 2008
A method of driving wedge test was proposed in order to qualify the effect of reinforcement on splitting strength of timber. The wedge was quasi-statically driven into timber in its longitudinal direction by structural testing machine, during which the load and displacement were measured until splitting failure.

Transmission properties in waveguides: An optical streamline analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
A novel approach to study transmission through waveguides in terms of optical streamlines is presented. This theoretical framework combines the computational performance of beam propagation methods with the possibility to monitor the passage of light ...

Multifunctional Crushing and Piezoresistive Self‐Sensing in Conductive Epoxy/CNT‐Coated Polyetherimide TPMS Lattices

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study reports lightweight polyetherimide triply periodic minimal surfaces lattices coated with carbon nanotube‐reinforced epoxy that combine mechanical robustness with self‐sensing. The conformal coating enhances stiffness, strength and energy absorption while enabling reliable strain monitoring.

Fatigue crack behaviour: comparing three-point bend test and wedge splitting test data on vibrated concrete using Paris' law

open access: yesFracture and Structural Integrity, 2016
The fatigue behaviour of concrete has become more important for the design of constructions due to the desire to build slimmer structures, which are more sensitive to fatigue loading.

Quantum fields on curved spacetimes and a new look at the Unruh effect

open access: yes, 2009
We describe a new viewpoint on canonical quantization of linear fields on a general curved background that encompasses and generalizes the standard treatment of canonical QFT given in textbooks.

Incorporation of Selenium into Sol–Gel‐Derived Bioactive Glass: Influence on Glass Structure, Bioactivity, and its Selective Cytotoxicity

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Selenium was incorporated into a sol–gel‐derived bioactive glass to enable sustained therapeutic ion release. The selenium‐containing glass preserved bioactivity while selectively inducing cytotoxicity in osteosarcoma cells and maintaining osteoblastic viability.

Determination of Fracture Properties of Concrete Using Size and Boundary Effect Models

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2019
Tensile strength and fracture toughness are two essential material parameters for the study of concrete fracture. The experimental procedures to measure these two fracture parameters might be complicated due to their dependence on the specimen size or ...
