Repeated grading of weed abundance and multivariate methods to improve the efficacy of on-farm weed control trials

open access: yes, 2007
We evaluated whether new information could be drawn from additional data collection and unconventional statistical analyses of an on-farm trial. First, we compared a conventional sampling method using a biomass estimate of weed abundance to repeated ...

Assessing the Feasibility of Wearable Devices for Physiological Monitoring and Heat Risk Prediction in Outdoor Agricultural Workers

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Industrial Medicine, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Outdoor agricultural workers experience significant heat exposure, yet few studies have evaluated whether wearable sensors can reliably measure continuous physiological responses in real field conditions. This pilot study examined the feasibility and predictive utility of core temperature, hydration, heart rate, and movement data ...

Weed competition and biomass production of maize and sorghum under different herbicide intensity level

open access: yes, 2012
The production of biogas still gains importance with maize being the most important crop for bioenergy production. However, the increasing area planted with maize has been considered as not being only beneficial. The question therefore arises whether the

Adaptive Genomic Divergence Across Altitudes in Capsella bursa‐pastoris

open access: yesBiological Diversity, EarlyView.
Genomic divergence was observed between high‐altitude and low‐altitude populations of Capsella bursa‐pastoris in China, consistent with an important role of ecological factors. Candidate adaptive loci associated with enhanced energy metabolism, photoprotection, and growth plasticity under altitudinal stress were identified.

Biology and Management of Graceful Sandmat (Chamaesyce hypericifolia) in Ornamental Crop Production

open access: yesEDIS, 2015
Graceful sandmat (Chamaesyce hypericifolia) is a problematic weed that often grows in container media in ornamental plant nurseries. This 4-page facts sheet profiles the biology of graceful sandmat and recommends physical, cultural, and chemicals ...

Orchard netting impacts on biodiversity leading to cascading effects at the ecosystem level

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Agriculture must ensure food production without further compromising the ecosystem functions upon which it depends. Agricultural practices should therefore avoid harming farmland biodiversity, especially of taxa that supply the key ecosystem services (e.g.

Dynamics of biotic resistance to plant invasions

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Biotic resistance, the reduction in invasion success caused by native communities, plays an important role in the long‐term dynamics of biological invasions. A large body of empirical research on biotic resistance has accumulated since the last comprehensive review on the subject 20 years ago, enabling us to achieve a refined understanding of ...

Kin discrimination in plants: overview and implications for population and community ecology

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Following the discovery of identity discrimination, particularly self and kin discrimination amongst plant competitors, research on interplant interactions has advanced significantly within plant physiology and evolutionary ecology. This review synthesizes current knowledge on how both self and kin discrimination influence plant growth ...
