Conditional Axle Group Load Spectra from Short-Term WIM Data Using XGBoost: A Nairobi Case Study

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Heavy and overloaded freight traffic strongly affects pavement performance, yet short-term weigh-in-motion (WIM) measurements are not easily converted into design-oriented traffic inputs.

Effects of Variation in Truck Factor on Pavement Performance in Pakistan [PDF]

open access: yesMehran University Research Journal of Engineering and Technology, 2013
Seasonal variation coupled with heavy axle loading is the key factor in rapid road deterioration in Pakistan. The serviceability loss is further accelerated by the fact that truck drivers and owners consider overloading as a profitable practice unaware ...

Effectiveness of Vehicle Weight Estimation from Bridge Weigh-in-Motion

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering, 2009
The effectiveness of vehicle weight estimations from bridge weigh-in-motion system is studied. The measured bending moments of the instrumented bridge under a passage of vehicle are numerically simulated and are used as the input for the vehicle weight ...

Modelling of traffic load effects in the assessment of existing road bridges

open access: yesGrađevinar, 2019
Traffic load models used for the design of new bridges are based on conservative assumptions and have not been proven efficient for assessing safety of existing bridges.

Two‐Way Shape Memory Polymer Composite Gripper for Adaptive Robotic Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A two‐way shape memory polymer (SMP) composite is developed with intrinsic shape‐changing capability driven solely by temperature, eliminating external actuation loads. Embedding the SMP in a low‐stiffness elastomeric matrix enabled reversible transformations during heating and cooling cycles.

Upscaling Pulsed Laser Fragmentation in Liquids by Advanced Free‐Flow Setups

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Advanced flow setups providing thin colloid films are introduced to upscale pulsed laser fragmentation in liquids for sustainable nanoparticle synthesis. Their potential is demonstrated by yielding remarkably small ZnO nanoparticles of <7 nm. Numerical simulations complement the study, revealing that the superior performance can be attributed to ...

Microfabrication of Soft Millirobots Propelled by Low Voltage Electrohydraulic Actuators

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Manual layer‐by‐layer assembly is replaced by wafer‐level MEMS batch fabrication for compliant polymer‐based electrohydraulic actuators. The microfabricated devices integrate sacrificially defined microcavities, Parylene‐C‐sealed inlets, and multilayer polymer–metal films.

UCST‐Driven Shape Morphing in Digital Light Processing 4D‐Printed Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A DLP‐printable UCST hydrogel based on poly(acrylic acid‐co‐acrylamide) enables reversible thermally induced expansion and 4D shape morphing. Rational control of composition, porosity, and multimaterial architecture enables predictable 4D shape morphing through differential swelling and localized actuation, opening new opportunities for high‐resolution
