Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Selenium improves weight gain of beef calves

open access: yesCalifornia Agriculture, 1979
Although the effects of weight loss from selenium-deficient cattle is less dramatic than death caused by white muscle disease (also resulting from selenium deficiency), the economic loss can be severe. Treatments with injections of selenium have produced

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Weight gain in pregnancy and its correlation with birth weight of infants in ‎women Who reffered to obstetric wards of Hajar hospital in Shahrekord

open access: yesJournal of Holistic Nursing and Midwifery, 2006
Introduction: Birth weight is one of the main determinators for somatic and mental growth in ‎infants and it is an important symptom of intrauterine growth. Thus recognition of factors that ‎affects the low birth weight and elimination of them is

Factors Associated with Interdialytic Weight Gain and Its Percentage: Are 2 Metrics Interchangeable?

open access: yesTurkish Journal of Nephrology
Background: Interdialytic weight gain (IDWG) is a key indicator of fluid management in hemodialysis patients. Greater IDWG reflects nonadherence to fluid restriction, excessive salt intake, and has been associated with reduced quality of life, increased

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Analysis of the microbiota of pregnant women in relation to weight gain during pregnancy – a pilot study

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology
IntroductionExcessive body weight was associated with changes in individual microbiota. However, limited research on the impact of excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) revealed that microbiota patterns related to GWG differed from those linked to ...

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.
