Warm Spring Weather Alters Calling Phenology of Four Sympatric Early‐Breeding Anurans

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
An unusually warm March in 2024 (“false spring”) followed by freezing temperatures allowed us to assess the impact of a weather event on an amphibian community. The calling activity of all four species was associated with increasing temperature, and the first date of calling was advanced by 11–18 days.

Camera Botanica: biodiversity armature

open access: yes, 2016
Research Background\ud \ud Bushfire safety and biodiversity conservation are typically considered to be opposing management goals in the world’s bushfire prone landscapes. Although this problem is of national and international significance there are very

Species‐Specific Genetic Patterns in Sympatric Freshwater Turtles Challenge a Generalized Multi‐Species Conservation Approach

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
We compared genetic diversity and spatial genetic structure in the snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina; left panel), Blanding's turtle (Emydoidea blandingii; bottom right), and spotted turtle (Clemmys guttata; top right) sampled in areas of co‐occurrence across ~49,160 km2.

Experimental investigation of the effect of the presence of obstacles at the end of the output keys of the C-type piano key weir on its downstream scour [PDF]

open access: yesعلوم آب و خاک
Piano key weirs are a type of non-linear weir that have a higher discharge coefficient than similar linear weirs. These hydraulic structures have a lightweight foundation and a simple structure is designed and installed on dams and drainage channels. Due

Finite-time thermodynamic optimal control of energy storage devices: a study of vanadium redox flow batteries

open access: yesJPhys Energy
Finite-time thermodynamics (FTTs) offers a consistent framework to achieve a desired trade-off between power and efficiency for energy conversion devices operating at steady state.

Nest Survival Models and Genomics Illuminate Hybridisation Attempts, Guiding Culturally Informed Management to Recover a Critically Endangered Seabird

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
Long‐term monitoring has revealed hybridisation attempts between the Critically Endangered Kuaka Whenua Hou (KWH, Pelecanoides whenuahouensis) and the abundant Kuaka (P. urinatrix). Here we use modelling based on population monitoring data in tandem with genomic data to investigate these attempts and the risk they pose to KWH recovery.

Comparative Efficiency of eDNA, Camera Traps and Scat Surveys to Detect a Semi‐Aquatic Mammal Across Multiple Catchments

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
Monitoring semi‐aquatic mammals is essential for their conservation, but it is made difficult by their elusive lifestyle and generally low abundance. Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) monitoring has traditionally relied on scat surveys, but eDNA and camera‐trapping are emerging as promising alternatives.
