Research on weld pool control of welding robot with computer vision

Industrial Robot: An International Journal, 2007
PurposeThe control of weld penetration in gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) is required for a “teach and playback” robot to overcome the gap variation in the welding process. This paper aims to investigate this subject.Design/methodology/approachThis paper presents a robotic system based on the real‐time vision measurement. The primary objective has been

Weld Pool Impedance for Pool Geometry Measurement: Stationary and Nonstationary Pools

Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement, and Control, 1989
The most elusive quantity in describing weld pool geometry is the depth, since it cannot be directly observed; yet it is the most important quantity to be regulated during welding. This paper addresses the problem of depth feedback measurement for full penetration welds, where the objective is to completely melt the cross section.

Numerical Simulation of MIG Weld Pool in Switchback Welding

Welding in the World, 2009
The authors proposed a switchback welding method to make stable back beads in the first layer weld during one-side multi-layer welding. In the proposed welding method, a welding torch is moved backwards and forwards like a switchback. The torch motion is important in the control of the weld pool.

Capillary waves on the weld pool in penetration welding with a laser

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 1989
In penetration welding with a laser, a ripple pattern is frozen into the weld bead. The causes of this are not clear but the frequencies most readily observed are likely to be related to the natural frequencies of oscillation of the weld pool when in its molten state.

Theory of the oscillations of an ellipsoidal weld pool in laser welding

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 1991
The weld bead formed when a laser is used for penetration welding usually exhibits a ripple pattern superimposed on the surface. The reasons for this are not clear but the frequencies most likely to be observed will be related to the natural frequencies of oscillation of the weld pool when it is molten. Postacioglu et al.

Numerical analysis of weld pool oscillation in laser welding

Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology, 2015
Volume of fluid (VOF) numerical simulation was used to investigate melt flow and volumetric oscillation of conduction-mode pulsed laser weld pools. The result is compared to high speed video stream of titanium laser spot welding experiment. The total simulation time is 10ms with the first 5 ms being heating and melting under constant laser irradiation ...

On determining the shape of weld pools

Applied Scientific Research, 1987
The equations governing heat and fluid flow in weld pools for the TIG fusion welding process are presented and this coupled system is solved numerically using finite differences. Electromagnetic forcing terms, buoyancy forces, shear forces on the pool surface due to the variation in surface tension with temperature and an additional uniform magnetic ...

The oscillation of stationary weld pool surface in the GTA welding

Journal of Materials Processing Technology, 2018
Abstract A three-dimensional transient numerical model of a pulsed GTA welding is established based on the volume of fluid (VOF) method to study the oscillation of stationary weld pool surface. The detecting and sensing method based laser vision is used to measure the oscillation frequency in the weld pool.

Marangoni convection in weld pools with a free surface

International Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids, 1989
AbstractA steady‐state two‐dimensional model of heat transfer and fluid flow was developed to describe Marangoni convection in the weld pool. Both the pool surface and the fusion boundary were calculated. The validity of the model was verified against an asymptotic solution for Marangoni‐convection‐induced free surface geometry.

Interaction of the keyhole and weld pool in laser keyhole welding

Journal of Laser Applications, 2002
There are several components to the motion of the liquid material in the weld pool in laser keyhole welding. Observations have shown not only that it moves in the plane perpendicular to the axis of the laser, but also that it moves parallel to the laser beam.
