Impact of Welding Sequence on the CRDM Nozzle-to-Vessel Weld Stress Analysis

Flaw Evaluation, Service Experience, and Materials for Hydrogen Service, 2004
A three-dimensional finite element model is presented to simulate the welding process of the side-hill control-rod-drive-mechanism (CRDM) nozzle to the vessel head. Emphasis is given to how the weld is laid out in the analysis so that accurate residual stress results can be obtained while the required computing time is viable.

Decreasing welding distortions in penetration nozzles by applying proper welding sequences

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part B: Journal of Engineering Manufacture, 2012
Welding distortions cause problems in assembly and performance of weldments, including nozzles in pressure vessels. In the present work, a three-dimensional thermo-mechanical finite element model was expanded to study the effect of the welding sequence on welding distortions in a pressurized nozzle.

Numerical Simulation of Welding Quality of Reinforcement Framework Under Different Welding Sequence

2021
The reinforcement framework is welded by the closed stirrup and the main reinforcement. The welding sequence of different welding points on the same stirrup has an important impact on the welding quality of the reinforcement framework. In order to optimize the welding sequence of reinforcement framework, the three-dimensional finite element model of ...

Influence of Welding Sequence on the Welding Residual Distortion for Laser Welded Sandwich Structures Used in Shipbuilding Industry

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2012
Based on the classical theory of welding structure, the welding residual distortion for laser welded sandwich structure was simulated using finite element method(FEM). The results showed that welding front all and then to back may lead to a relatively high welding residual distortion. The maximum distortion in Z-direction is higher than 0.5mm.

Influence of Welding Sequence on Residual Stresses Induced in As-Welded Plug Weld of Low-Carbon Steel Plate

Transactions of the Indian Institute of Metals, 2019
Weld distortion is a major issue in splice joint to get a perfect contact between mating parts. The hole in the bolted spliced joints of boiler structure may get dislocated due to error in process. The bolt hole is to be plug-welded for critical applications.

Modelling of Welding Sequences for Minimization of Weld-Induced Distortions and Residual Stresses

2019
In this work, thermal elastic–plastic analysis (TEPA) has been performed to analyse the fillet welded joint to minimize the weld-induced residual stresses and distortions. Various possible welding sequences, considering the start and end positions of the heat source along with their directions of motion, were decided. Those sequences were simulated and

Post Weld Overlay Residual Stresses in Dissimilar Metal Welds Considering Various Butt Weld and Weld Repair Fabrication Sequences

Volume 6: Materials and Fabrication, Parts A and B, 2009
Weld overlays have been used to repair or mitigate stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in both boiling water reactor (BWR) and pressurized water reactor (PWR) nozzle-to-pipe dissimilar metal welds (DMW). One of the contributing factors to SCC is the high tensile residual stresses produced during the fabrication of the original butt weld, especially when ...

Combinatorial optimization of weld sequence by using a surrogate model to mitigate a weld distortion

International Journal of Mechanics and Materials in Design, 2011
Choosing an optimal sequence from the set of all possible combinations of a weld’s sub-passes is always a challenge for designers. The solution of such combinatorial optimization problems is limited by the available resources. For example, having n sub-passes leads to choosing from 2 n  × n!
