Permafrost Degradation Drives Shifts in Chemostasis and Stream Geochemistry in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 17, 16 September 2026.
Abstract In the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica's largest ice‐free area, the stream channels consist of rock and sediment that are underlain by permafrost. Substantial permafrost degradation and channel erosion occurred in January 2012 on the west branch of Crescent Stream, while the east branch remained unaffected.

The Source of Arctic Precipitation in HadGEM3‐GC5

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 17, 16 September 2026.
Abstract Snow and rain are increasing in the Arctic. Climate model projections indicate a 50% increase in precipitation by the end of the century. This increase is driven by increased local evaporation following reduced sea ice coverage alongside enhanced global evaporation and transport into the Arctic.

Sedimentology and geochemistry of the recent sediments of the river system on Hurd Peninsula, Livingston Island, Antarctica

open access: yesThe Depositional Record, Volume 12, Issue 4, September 2026.
This study investigates the sedimentology and geochemistry of recent sediments from ephemeral river systems on Hurd Peninsula, Livingston Island, Antarctica. These systems are important for understanding sedimentary and geochemical processes in unique polar environments.

Population Status, Ecology and Conservation Challenges of Cattle Egrets (Bubulcus ibis), Especially in the Southern Africa Subregion: A Systematic Review and Evidence Synthesis

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
The Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) occupies a wide range of natural and human‐modified habitats, yet research effort across its range is highly uneven. Our systematic review of 173 studies synthesises patterns in population trends, habitat use, breeding ecology, threats and ecosystem services, revealing strong geographic and thematic biases in available ...

Fine‐Scale Population Genomics Reveals Genetic Differentiation in the Brooding Amphipod Cheirimedon femoratus Across the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
Using genotyping‐by‐sequencing‐derived single‐nucleotide polymorphisms, we investigated population connectivity in the Antarctic benthic amphipod Cheirimedon femoratus across the South Shetland Islands. Despite the limited dispersal potential of this brooding species, populations showed substantial genetic connectivity, likely maintained through ...
