Mass transfer during the osmotic dehydration of West Indian cherry

open access: yesLWT - Food Science and Technology, 2012
AbstractThe main purpose of this work was to study water loss, solids gain, and weight and moisture reduction during the osmotic dehydration process of the West Indian cherry (Malpighia punicifolia). The diffusion coefficient of West Indian cherry was estimated by the inverse method using average moisture contents.

Photosynthesis, photochemical efficiency and growth of west indian cherry cultivated with saline waters and nitrogen fertilization

open access: yesBioscience Journal, 2019
In the semi-arid region of Northeast Brazil, water salinity is one of the main abiotic factors limiting crop growth and development. However, given the water scarcity affecting this region, the use of waters with moderate to high salt contents becomes ...

NPK fertilization modulates enzyme activity and mitigates the impacts of salinity on West Indian cherry [PDF]

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology
Salt stress causes several physiological and biochemical disorders and impairs plant growth. However, adequate fertilization can improve the nutritional status and may reduce significantly the harmful effects caused by salt stress. From this perspective,

Sandy soils compatibility and least limiting water range under organic, irrigated and perennials management [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports
Agricultural systems have advanced, but challenges remain in improving efficiency while maintaining soil quality in irrigated areas. This study evaluated compaction, compressibility, and the least limiting water range (LLWR) in sandy soils cultivated ...

Contribution of entomophilous pollination to fruit production of West Indian cherry plants

open access: yesPesquisa Agropecuária Tropical, 2015
The production of West Indian cherry may increase considerably when its flowers are visited by bees. This study aimed to determine the dependence degree of the West Indian cherry Olivier cultivar, concerning the entomophilous pollination, as well as ...

Effect of operating temperature on component distribution of West Indian cherry juice in a microfiltration system

open access: yesLWT - Food Science and Technology, 2005
Abstract Microfiltration (MF) with a 0.14 μm cut-off tubular ceramic membrane was used to clarify West Indian cherry juice under operating conditions of flow rate 8.0 l/min, pressure 0.2 MPa and temperatures 10–40 °C. The analytical results demonstrated that heat treatment was effective in reducing fouling layer specific resistance.

Centridini Bees as Manageable Pollinators of West Indian Cherry (Malpighia emarginata, Malpighiaceae) Orchards in Southeast Brazil

open access: yesSociobiology
The West Indian cherry (Malpighia emarginata), commonly referred to as “Acerola”, has attracted particular interest due to its high vitamin C content in the fruit. One of the limitations observed in Acerola crops is their dependence on cross-pollination,
