Predicting Skipjack Tuna Fishing Grounds in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean Based on High-Spatial-Temporal-Resolution Satellite Data

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2021
Skipjack tuna are the most abundant commercial species in Taiwan’s pelagic purse seine fisheries. However, the rapidly changing marine environment increases the challenge of locating target fish in the vast ocean.

Coherent amplification of the Okhotsk high, Korean trough, and northwestern Pacific subtropical high during heavy rainfall over Japan in August 2021

open access: yesProgress in Earth and Planetary Science, 2023
In August 2021, rain front stagnation in Japan resulted in prolonged and disastrous rainfall across the entire country. During the heavy rainfall period, the large-scale atmospheric field over the East Asian–western North Pacific region was characterized

Unexpected limitation of tropical cyclone genesis by subsurface tropical central-north Pacific during El Niño

open access: yesNature Communications, 2022
Wind stress curl anomalies break the ocean dynamical bond between sea surface and subsurface, constraining tropical cyclone genesis in the tropical central-north Pacific, leading to comparable number of TC for El Niño and La Niña in the western North ...

Distribution of nano-sized Cyanobacteria in the western and central Pacific Ocean [PDF]

open access: yesAquatic Microbial Ecology, 2010
We investigated the distribution of nano-sized unicellular Cyanobacteria (nanocyanobacteria) in the Pacific Ocean. Nanocyanobacteria were distributed in the mixed layer throughout the western and central regions of the North and South Pacific subtropical gyres, where nitrate depletion and high irradiance are maintained throughout the year.

Two Hidden mtDNA-Clades of Crown-of-Thorns Starfish in the Pacific Ocean

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2022
Recurring outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish (COTS) severely damage healthy corals, especially in the Western Pacific Ocean. To obtain a better understanding of population genetics of COTS and historical colonization across the Pacific Ocean, complete

Drivers and characteristics of the Indo-western Pacific Ocean capacitor

open access: yesFrontiers in Climate, 2022
Coherently coupled ocean-atmosphere variability of the tropical Indo-Pacific Oceans gives rise to the predictability of Asian summer climate. Recent advances in Indo-western Pacific Ocean capacitor (IPOC) theory and the relationship with El Niño-Southern

Sedimentary CaCO3 Accumulation in the Deep West Pacific Ocean

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2022
Distribution of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in marine sediment has been studied over the last century, and influence by multiple factors with regard to dissolution and dilution of sedimentary CaCO3 has long been established.

Addressing Issues and Challenges in Managing Migratory Tuna Resources in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of the Commons, 2021
Tuna resources in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean are the world’s largest and most valuable fisheries of their type and are vital to the economy and the sustainable development of the region. However, the region witnesses a rapid decline in tuna resources and the depletion of species such as bigeye and yellowfin tunas, and overharvesting of the ...
