Iterative optimization of the filling phase of wet clutches

2010 11th IEEE International Workshop on Advanced Motion Control (AMC), 2010
This paper considers the control of wet clutches, and presents a two-level control strategy to learn and adapt the control signals during normal machine operation. With this approach it is possible to avoid the current practise of experimental calibrations, where regular recalibrations are needed to compensate for time-varying dynamics, e.g.

Benchtop screening of wet clutch materials

Tribology International, 2018
Abstract To decrease development time, bench-top screening tests are often used to rank materials prior to selection for standardized full-scale component test rigs, in-service vehicle tests, or system field testing. This paper describes the results from screening tests of four different paper-based clutch materials using a small scale bench-top test

Modeling Heat Transfer in a Wet Clutch

SAE Technical Paper Series, 1990
<div class="htmlview paragraph">The results of research involving the development and verification of a heat transfer model for a multiple-plate wet clutch are presented. Three specific operating conditions were considered: (1) engaged and slipping, (2) engaged and not slipping, and (3) disengaged.

A study of delamination of wet clutches

JSAE Review, 1999
Abstract The delamination mechanism of a wet clutch in an automatic transmission has not been discussed in detail. In order to investigate this mechanism, two deterioration tests were run. One was applying mechanical stroking and shear torque to a wet clutch. The other was immersing cotton thread in various fluids.

Wet Clutch Energy Calculation

SAE Technical Paper Series, 1984
<div class="htmlview paragraph">Formulas are derived to show that moving elements of a drive train can contribute to the energy seen by the clutch plates.</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">Oscillograph traces, sample calculations and photographs of failed plates show actual energy at failure of test plates.</div> <div ...

A Wet Clutch for Farm Tractors

SAE Technical Paper Series, 1968
<div class="htmlview paragraph">Many of the modern, heavy-duty farm, construction, and industrial machines are being outfitted with some type of wet clutch. Either mechanically or hydraulically actuated, these oil-cooled multidisc clutches have much to offer when installed in the new higher horsepower equipment.

Research on the Wet Clutch Engagement Torque

Volume 7: 2nd Biennial International Conference on Dynamics for Design; 26th International Conference on Design Theory and Methodology, 2014
The driving performance of the vehicle with automatic transmission is influenced by the performance of the wet clutch directly. But at present it is still a challenge to build a reliable predictable model for the torque of the engagement process of the wet clutch.

Investigation of thermoelastic instabilities of wet clutches

2013 IEEE International Symposium on Assembly and Manufacturing (ISAM), 2013
A bench experiment was designed to test the rotational speed and torque of the wet clutch, so as to calculate the equivalent friction coefficient. With this coefficient, the unstable behavior of friction systems with lubrication can be researched by a similar method with dry friction systems.

Adaptive Feed-Forward Control of the Clutch Filling Phase for Wet Dual Clutch Transmission

IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, 2020
Clutch fill control in clutch-to-clutch shift process is an essential technique to ensure smooth and precise synchronization of clutches. The filling control methods proposed in previous works are difficult to apply to production vehicles because of huge calibration effort and numerical issues of the system model.

Paper 16: Friction in Wet Clutches

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Conference Proceedings, 1967
This paper is intended to demonstrate that designers of wet clutches for power transmission can obtain the optimum friction characteristics for specific applications by considering the interaction between friction materials and lubricants. A friction clutch plate rig is described and the friction results obtained are presented.
