Wettability of Sanded and Aged Fast-growing Poplar Wood Surfaces: II. Dynamic Wetting Models

open access: yesBioResources, 2014
The dynamic wettability of adhesive on sanded and aged wood surfaces was measured using the sessile drop method. Four different models were used to evaluate and compare the wetting process.

Characterization of Clinical Phenotype to Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein Concentrations in Alexander Disease

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To determine the concentration of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma in Alexander disease (AxD) and whether GFAP levels are predictive of disease phenotypes. Methods CSF and plasma were collected (longitudinally when available) from AxD participants and non‐AxD controls.

Enhancing Corrosion Resistance and Mechanical Strength of 3D‐Printed Iron Polylactic Acid for Marine Applications via Laser Surface Texturing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Laser surface texturing significantly improves the corrosion resistance and mechanical strength of 3D‐printed iron polylactic acid (Ir‐PLA) for marine applications. Optimal laser parameters reduce corrosion by 80% and enhance tensile strength by 25% and ductility by 15%.

Impact of Textile Architecture on the Electromechanical Behavior of Conductive Carbon: Silicone Composite Strain Sensors

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A stretchable carbon composite is integrated by stencil printing onto two different types of textile, with different yarn morphologies. The impact of the knit structure and coating direction on the performance of the sensor composite is evaluated and used to derive a model estimating nominal resistance at a given strain near the percolation threshold ...

Wettability Increase by “Corona” Ionization [PDF]

open access: yesLangmuir, 2011
Experiments showing an increase in the wettability of a hydrophobic surface when using corona air ionization are shown. Photoluminiscence observations support the predictions of charge accumulation at the triple line and confirm previous experiments. In all of the experiments, the contact angle was in the saturation regime at a value smaller than that ...

Adjustment of Coatings Morphology and Particle Distribution of Layered Silicates by Freeze‐Drying for Improved Gas Barriers

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Freeze‐drying of layered silicate is the key to get coatings with superior gas barrier. Freeze‐drying of layered silicates modified with dodecylamine (DDA) is a highly effective technique for the preparation of barrier pigments that significantly mitigate the permeation of oxygen, water vapor, and hydrogen through polymer films containing these ...

An Inkjet‐Printed Platinum‐Based Temperature Sensing Element on Polyimide Substrates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An inkjet‐printed, meander‐structured, nanoparticle platinum‐based resistive temperature sensors on polyimide substrates are demonstrated as proof‐of‐concept. Optimized sintering at 250°C enables stable conductive structures. The Pt100‐ and Pt1000‐type sensors exhibit linear resistance–temperature characteristics with stable TCR in the 20°C–80°C range,

Harnessing Fungal Biowelding for Constructing Mycelium‐Engineered Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mycelium‐bound composites (MBCs) offer low‐carbon alternatives for construction, yet interfacial bonding remains a critical challenge. This review examines fungal biowelding as a biocompatible adhesive, elucidating mycelium‐mediated interfacial mechanisms and their role in material assembly. Strategies to optimize biowelding are discussed, highlighting
