Liquid Crystal Elastomers Under Confinement: A Review of Template‐Based Fabrication and Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Template‐assisted confinement offers powerful ways to control the alignment, structure, and function of liquid crystal elastomers. This review highlights several templating strategies and details how geometry and interfaces shape material responses.

On the Modeling of Droplet Evaporation on Superhydrophobic Surfaces

open access: yes, 2015
When a drop of water is placed on a rough surface, there are two possible extreme regimes of wetting: the one called Cassie-Baxter (CB) with air pockets trapped underneath the droplet and the one characterized by the homogeneous wetting of the surface ...

Additive Manufacturing of Hot Work Tool Steel by Laser Powder Bed Fusion Utilizing Powder Mixtures Including Grinding Chips: Assessing Chemical Homogeneity and Achievable Hardness

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Grinding chips of high‐alloyed steel are prepared to be admixed to a starting powder mixture for laser powder bed fusion. A three‐stage preparation is performed, including washing in acetone, magnetic separation, and ball milling. The addition of 30% of grinding chips to the powder mixture allows the fabrication of dense samples.

Tribological performance of ionic liquid-lubricated carbon brush/collector ring current-carrying friction system

open access: yesBiosurface and Biotribology, 2020
The lubricity and anti-wear ability of ionic liquids (ILs) were studied by a current-carrying friction test on IL-lubricated carbon brushes. The results indicated that the conductivity and wear resistance of different ILs are different, and may vary for ...

Wetting and Capillary Condensation in Symmetric Polymer Blends: A comparison between Monte Carlo Simulations and Self-Consistent Field Calculations

open access: yes, 1998
We present a quantitative comparison between extensive Monte Carlo simulations and self-consistent field calculations on the phase diagram and wetting behavior of a symmetric, binary (AB) polymer blend confined into a film.

Advancing Research on Biomaterials and Biological Materials with Scanning Electron Microscopy under Environmental and Low Vacuum Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Herein, environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) is discussed as a powerful extension of conventional SEM for life sciences. By combining high‐resolution imaging with variable pressure and humidity, ESEM allows the analysis of untreated biological materials, supports in situ monitoring of hydration‐driven changes, and advances the functional ...

Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Wetting on Wavelike Nanorough Surfaces

open access: yesTribology Online, 2011
A Molecular Dynamics (MD) technique is proposed to simulate the motion of water nanodroplets on wavelike nanorough surfaces and the contact angle is evaluated.
