In this review we discuss the fundamental role of surface forces, with a particular emphasis on the effect of the disjoining pressure, in establishing the wetting regime in the three phase systems with both plane and curved geometry. The special attention is given to the conditions of the formation of wetting/adsorption liquid films on the surface of ...

Surface forces in wetting films
Advances in Colloid and Interface Science, 2003A short review of various components of surface forces acting in a non-symmetrical system such as wetting films is presented here. Experimental results are compared with modified DLVO theory, which includes, besides dispersion and electrostatic, structural (solvation) forces caused by a change in liquid structure in conditions of confined geometry. The

We investigate the wetting properties of random nanostructured surfaces, with particular attention devoted to the phenomenon of contact angle hysteresis. For this purpose, solid substrates were initially tailored at a nanometric scale by using swift heavy ion irradiation which produced a random distribution of defects.

Wetting of Nanopatterned Grooved Surfaces
Physical Review Letters, 2010The wetting by perfluoromethylcyclohexane of a well-defined silicon grating with a channel width of 16 nm has been studied using transmission small angle x-ray scattering. Prefilling, capillary filling, and postfilling wetting regimes have been identified.

Surface forces and wetting phenomena
Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, 2009Conditions for thermodynamic equilibrium of liquid drops on solid substrates are presented. It is shown that if surface force (disjoining/conjoining Derjaguin pressure) action in a vicinity of the three-phase contact line is taken into account the condition of thermodynamic equilibrium is duly satisfied.

Tunable Wetting of Polymer Surfaces
Langmuir, 2012A simple method was developed for the preparation of polymeric materials with controlled surface wettability or tunable surface wetting. The method is applicable to a large number of polymers, thermoplastic or thermoset. With this method, it is possible to prepare polymer surfaces with static water contact angles ranging from 0° (superhydrophilic) to ...

Turning autophobic wetting on biomimetic surfaces into complete wetting by wetting additives
Soft Matter, 2020Autophobicity or pseudo partial wetting, a phenomenon of a liquid not spreading on its own monolayer, is characterized by an energy barrier that prevents the growth of a wetting film beyond the monolayer thickness, which additionally may have an impact on the conditioning performance of films.

Anisotropy in the wetting of rough surfaces
Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 2005Surface roughness amplifies the water-repellency of hydrophobic materials. If the roughness geometry is, on average, isotropic then the shape of a sessile drop is almost spherical and the apparent contact angle of the drop on the rough surface is nearly uniform along the contact line.

Wetting of Nanogrooved Polymer Surfaces
Langmuir, 2007Molecular dynamics simulations were used to study the wetting of nanogrooved PE and PVC polymer surfaces. The contact angles, equilibrium states, and equilibrium shapes of two nanosized water droplets were analyzed on surfaces with 1D-arranged periodic roughness of various dimensions.
