The ionosphere as a whispering gallery

Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series A. Mathematical and Physical Sciences, 1962
The propagation of radio waves of very low frequency to great distances is conveniently treated by regarding the space between the earth and the ionosphere as a wave-guide. Several authors have found that the least attenuated modes are profoundly affected by the earth’s curvature. This effect is investigated for several models of the ionosphere.

Whispering Gallery Mode Microresonators for Biosensing [PDF]

open access: possibleAdvances in Science and Technology, 2012
In the field of sensing, WGM microresonators are receiving a growing interest as optical structures suitable for the realization of miniature sensors with high sensitivity. When properly excited, WGM microresonators are able to strongly confine light, by means of total internal reflection, along the equatorial plane near their spherical surface.

Whispering-gallery laser resonators. I. Diffraction of whispering-gallery modes

IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, 1991
Whispering-gallery optics for use at soft X-ray and extreme ultraviolet wavelengths are examined for their potential applications in laser resonators. An examination is made of beam divergence at the exit of a whispering gallery resonator. The properties of whispering-gallery eigenmodes are reviewed, and the features of their Fourier transforms ...

Whispering-gallery waves

Quantum Electronics, 2002
A review of the theory of the natural waves (eigen-modes) in a dielectric sphere is presented. A special attention is paid to the eigenmodes with large radial and azimuthal indices, the so-called whispering-gallery modes. The experimental results of the spectroscopic study of modes in a dielectric sphere are reported.

Surface whispering-gallery mode

EPL (Europhysics Letters), 2011
Metamaterials can exhibit electromagnetic characteristics beyond those found in nature. In this letter, we demonstrate that Surface Whispering-gallery mode (SWGM) can be generated by coating a microresonator with a layer of metamaterials. Different from WGM, whose waves are mostly confined within the microresonator, the SWGM propagate at the interface ...

Langatate whispering gallery resonator

Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE International Frequncy Control Symposium and PDA Exhibition (Cat. No.01CH37218), 2002
This paper is devoted to basic characteristics of a langatate (LGT) "whispering gallery" dielectric resonator. The main attention is concentrated on frequency-temperature characteristics. Since the principal components of LGT dielectric permittivity vary in opposite directions with temperature it opens a possibility to annul the frequency-temperature ...

Whispering gallery micro-cavities

Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics, 2017
Light-matter interactions are the fundamental basis for many phenomena and processes in optical devices. Whispering-Gallery-Mode (WGM) optical resonators trap light in a manner similar to a phenomenon found in the gallery spaces of St. Paul's Cathedral dome in London, where a single whisper (i.e., a sound wave) can be heard along the circular boundary ...

Nonlinear Whispering Gallery Modes

Physical Review Letters, 1999
The stationary lasing of the modes in a microdisk is formulated as a nonlinear eigenvalue problem for a nonlinear Maxwell equation. It is shown that whispering gallery modes can be obtained as stationary lasing solutions with finite pumping thresholds.

Whose Whispers Are in the Gallery?

2018
Not quite forty years after Morse sent the world's first telegraph message only from Baltimore to Washington, Joseph Cowen gave the House of Commons a dramatic view of an entire world that was shrinking. His cautions about the meaning of all this are very pertinent over a century later.

Whispering Gallery Mode Devices

2020
Whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators and lately photonic crystal resonator based devices are attractive due to their potential applications in photonics and recently in biophotonics as is described in the previous chapter. Applications which have been realized include for example lasers, filters, optical switches and biosensors.
