Whispering Galleries: the small magazines
New Blackfriars, 1996According to George Steiner, commentary is without end. No, strictly that is not quite accurate. What he said was that it was without end “in the worlds of interpretative and critical discourse”, where there are no final conclusions. “Essay speaks to essay, article chatters to article in an endless gallery of querulous echo,” he said in his book Real ...

Whispering Gallery Mode Biosensor
2010None of civilization’s socio-political catastrophes (e.g. world wars) have caused an equivalent destructive effect on the world’s population as biological pandemics [1]. Exponentially growing pathogens are difficult to contain and eliminate unless they can be detected early on.

Spiral whispering-gallery resonators
SPIE Proceedings, 2005High-Q whispering-gallery modes with unidirectional emission are present in spiral - shaped microresonators despite completely chaotic ray dynamics. We demonstrate that formation of such modes is due to dynamical localization, and develop the theory of this effect.

Whispering-Gallery Microsensors and Microlasers
2007 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics - Pacific Rim, 2007The high-Q whispering-gallery modes of fused-silica microresonators have enabled the development of intracavity-absorption chemical sensors and ultralow-threshold quantum-dot lasers. The sensors can have effective absorption pathlengths of meters, and the lasers have pump thresholds of a few hundred nanowatts. Some examples of both applications will be

Sapphire Whispering Gallery Thermometer
International Journal of Thermophysics, 2007An innovative sapphire whispering gallery thermometer (SWGT) is being explored at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as a potential replacement for a standard platinum resistance thermometer (SPRT) for industrial applications that require measurement uncertainties of ≤ 10 mK.
