Enhancing whispering gallery mode biosensing

2013 15th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON), 2013
First, years of work on advancing the device physics and engineering of WGM biosensors has improved the ultimate physical detection limits of WGM transducers, yet the limits for DNA detection by hybridization has plateaued. Molecular recognition of DNA at a surface limits the biosensors' sensitivity, specificity, and reusability.

Whispering gallery microcavity lasers

Laser & Photonics Reviews, 2012
AbstractWhispering gallery mode (WGM) optical microresonators have attracted intense interests in the past decades. The combination of high quality factors (Q) and small mode volumes of modes in WGM resonators significantly enhances the light‐matter interactions, making them excellent cavities for achieving low threshold and narrow linewidth lasers. Whispering Gallery Mode Devices

2020
Whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators and lately photonic crystal resonator based devices are attractive due to their potential applications in photonics and recently in biophotonics as is described in the previous chapter. Applications which have been realized include for example lasers, filters, optical switches and biosensors.

Optical whispering-gallery microresonators

SPIE Proceedings, 1994
Quality factor 2.5 X 109 at the wavelength (lambda) equals 0.63 micrometers is reported in approximately 100 micrometers spherical resonators of fused silica with whispering-gallery modes (equivalent finesse F equals 2.5 X 106). Quality-factor 3 X 107 and effective thermal tunability of modes (up to 0.1%) is demonstrated in whispering-gallery ...

2D whispering gallery vs. 3D whispering cave

SPIE Proceedings, 2008
Lord Rayleigh's 2 dimensional (2D) whispering gallery mode (WGM) is based upon 2D total internal reflection (TIR) while 3D whispering cave mode (WCM) is based upon 3D TIR. 3D WCM is however irreducible to 2D WGM: The 2D WGM is confined to a thin microdisk with a cylindrical symmetry solvable via Bessel function analysis while the 3D WCM is confined ...

Whispering Gallery Modes Microcavity

2021
This chapter introduces the origin of the Whispering-gallery modes (WGM) microcavities. The WGM microcavities have independent optical and mechanical properties. Several terminologies, such as optical or mechanical quality factor, used in cavities are introduced. The mode characterization and field distribution of the microsphere is discussed.

Hollow whispering gallery resonators

Laser Resonators, Microresonators, and Beam Control XX, 2018
In recent years, whispering gallery mode (WGM) devices have extended their functionality across a number of research fields from photonics device development to sensing applications. Here, we will discuss some such recent applications using ultrahigh Q-factor hollow resonators fabricated from pretapered glass capillary.

Nonlinear Whispering Gallery Modes

Physical Review Letters, 1999
The stationary lasing of the modes in a microdisk is formulated as a nonlinear eigenvalue problem for a nonlinear Maxwell equation. It is shown that whispering gallery modes can be obtained as stationary lasing solutions with finite pumping thresholds.
