Whispering-gallery mode terahertz pulses

Optics Letters, 2002
We report what is to our knowledge the first observation of a subpicosecond terahertz (THz) pulse propagating as a superposition of the whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) of a dielectric cylinder. The WGM THz pulses are coupled into and out of a 5-mm-diameter silicon cylinder via a 100-mum -thick, single-mode silicon slab waveguide.

Dispersion compensation in whispering-gallery modes

Journal of the Optical Society of America A, 2003
We show that manipulation by a spatial profile of the refractive index of a circularly symmetric dielectric cavity results in a novel way of fine tuning frequency separations as well as spatial localizations of high-Q whispering-gallery modes excited in the cavity.

Whispering gallery mode diamond resonator

Optics Letters, 2013
We demonstrate a nearly spherical diamond whispering gallery mode resonator with quality factor (Q factor) Q=2.4×10(7) limited by material loss approaching α=4×10(-3) cm(-1). The Q factor does not depend on the wavelength: it is approximately the same at 1319 and 1550 nm. Resonators with this range of Q (

Whispering Gallery Mode Microresonators for Biosensing

Advances in Science and Technology, 2012
In the field of sensing, WGM microresonators are receiving a growing interest as optical structures suitable for the realization of miniature sensors with high sensitivity. When properly excited, WGM microresonators are able to strongly confine light, by means of total internal reflection, along the equatorial plane near their spherical surface.

Enhancing whispering gallery mode biosensing

2013 15th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON), 2013
First, years of work on advancing the device physics and engineering of WGM biosensors has improved the ultimate physical detection limits of WGM transducers, yet the limits for DNA detection by hybridization has plateaued. Molecular recognition of DNA at a surface limits the biosensors' sensitivity, specificity, and reusability.

Whispering Gallery Mode Devices

2020
Whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators and lately photonic crystal resonator based devices are attractive due to their potential applications in photonics and recently in biophotonics as is described in the previous chapter. Applications which have been realized include for example lasers, filters, optical switches and biosensors.

Surface whispering-gallery mode

EPL (Europhysics Letters), 2011
Metamaterials can exhibit electromagnetic characteristics beyond those found in nature. In this letter, we demonstrate that Surface Whispering-gallery mode (SWGM) can be generated by coating a microresonator with a layer of metamaterials. Different from WGM, whose waves are mostly confined within the microresonator, the SWGM propagate at the interface ...

Nonlinear Whispering Gallery Modes

Physical Review Letters, 1999
The stationary lasing of the modes in a microdisk is formulated as a nonlinear eigenvalue problem for a nonlinear Maxwell equation. It is shown that whispering gallery modes can be obtained as stationary lasing solutions with finite pumping thresholds.

Classification of whispering gallery modes for cladded systems

Optics & Laser Technology, 2023
International audience ; A classification of whispering gallery modes has been proposed between three types : core modes, cladding modes and composed modes. While core modes or cladding modes are interesting to generate with a sensor purpose, composed modes propagate in both core and coating and therefore should be avoided. In this paper, a theoretical

Whispering Gallery Modes Microcavity

2021
This chapter introduces the origin of the Whispering-gallery modes (WGM) microcavities. The WGM microcavities have independent optical and mechanical properties. Several terminologies, such as optical or mechanical quality factor, used in cavities are introduced. The mode characterization and field distribution of the microsphere is discussed.
