Detecting Mediterranean White Sharks with Environmental DNA

open access: yesOceanography, 2023
The white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) is a globally distributed, ecologically important top predator whose biology and population dynamics are challenging to study. Basic biological parameters remain virtually unknown in the Mediterranean Sea due to its historically low population density, dwindling population size, and lack of substantial sightings.

A re-evaluation of the size of the white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) population off California, USA. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
White sharks are highly migratory and segregate by sex, age and size. Unlike marine mammals, they neither surface to breathe nor frequent haul-out sites, hindering generation of abundance data required to estimate population size.

Future Research Directions on the “Elusive” White Shark [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2018
White sharks, Carcharodon carcharias, are often described as elusive, with little information available due to the logistical difficulties of studying large marine predators that make long-distance migrations across ocean basins. Increased understanding of aggregation patterns, combined with recent advances in technology have, however, facilitated a ...

White Sharks Exploit the Sun during Predatory Approaches [PDF]

open access: yesThe American Naturalist, 2015
There is no conclusive evidence of any nonhuman animal using the sun as part of its predation strategy. Here, we show that the world's largest predatory fish-the white shark (Carcharodon carcharias)-exploits the sun when approaching baits by positioning the sun directly behind them.

Early insights into the seasonal and spatial distribution of white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) along the Maine coastline

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
While significant progress has been made to characterize life history patterns, movement ecology, and regional estimates of abundance of white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) in the Western North Atlantic (WNA), patterns of spatial distribution remain ...

New record of white shark, Carcharodon carcharias (Elasmobranchii, Lamniformes, Lamnidae), from the Mediterranean Spanish coast [PDF]

open access: yesActa Ichthyologica et Piscatoria
This study presents a new record of the white shark, Carcharodon carcharias (Linnaeus, 1758), in Spanish Mediterranean waters. We discuss this finding in the context of documented records from 1862 to 2023, which include direct observations and indirect ...

The influence of environmental variables on the presence of white sharks, Carcharodon carcharias at two popular Cape Town bathing beaches: a generalized additive mixed model. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Shark attacks on humans are high profile events which can significantly influence policies related to the coastal zone. A shark warning system in South Africa, Shark Spotters, recorded 378 white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) sightings at two popular ...

Passive Prey Discrimination in Surface Predatory Behaviour of Bait-Attracted White Sharks from Gansbaai, South Africa

open access: yesAnimals, 2021
Between the years 2008 and 2013, six annual research expeditions were carried out at Dyer Island (Gansbaai, South Africa) to study the surface behaviour of white sharks in the presence of two passive prey: tuna bait and a seal-shaped decoy.

The megamouth shark, Megachasma pelagios, is not a luminous species.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2020
Despite its five meters length, the megamouth shark (Megachasma pelagios Taylor, Compagno & Struhsaker, 1983) is one of the rarest big sharks known in the world (117 specimens observed and documented so far). This filter-feeding shark has been assumed to
