Eyes on the size: accuracy of visual length estimates of white sharks, Carcharodon carcharias [PDF]

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2019
Visual estimates have been used extensively to determine the length of large organisms that are logistically challenging to measure. However, there has been little effort to quantify the accuracy or validity of this technique despite inaccurate size ...

The Deep Past of the White Shark, Carcharodon carcharias, in the Mediterranean Sea: A Synthesis of Its Palaeobiology and Palaeoecology [PDF]

open access: yesLife, 2023
The white shark, Carcharodon carcharias, is the main top predator of the present-day Mediterranean Sea. The deep past of C. carcharias in the Mediterranean is witnessed by a rather conspicuous, mostly Pliocene fossil record.

Effectiveness of novel fabrics to resist punctures and lacerations from white shark (Carcharodon carcharias): Implications to reduce injuries from shark bites. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
Increases in the number of shark bites, along with increased media attention on shark-human interactions has led to growing interest in preventing injuries from shark bites through the use of personal mitigation measures.

Evidence of maternal offloading of organic contaminants in white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias). [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Organic contaminants were measured in young of the year (YOY) white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) incidentally caught in southern California between 2005 and 2012 (n = 20) and were found to be unexpectedly high considering the young age and dietary ...

Preliminary Data about Habitat Use of Subadult and Adult White Sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) in Eastern Australian Waters [PDF]

open access: yesBiology, 2022
In eastern Australia, white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) are targeted in shark control programs, yet the movement of subadults and adults of the eastern Australasian population is poorly understood.

Investigating the Predation Risk of Coastal Dolphins via the Presence of Shark Bite Scars Across Southeast Queensland, Australia. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
Shark bite scars were analysed on coastal dolphins in southeast Queensland, Australia to compare the predation risk between species and habitats. Australian humpback dolphins (Sousa sahulensis) exhibited the highest bite rates and individuals found in sheltered waters had higher shark bite scar prevalence than open waters.

Genome-wide identification and solute selectivity of aquaporins in the sharpnose sevengill shark, Heptranchias perlo. [PDF]

open access: yesPhysiol Rep
Abstract The aquaporin genes (aqps) are widely distributed among vertebrates. In cartilaginous fish, aqp3 and aqp10 are duplicated, whereas many species have lost aqp8. While the solute permeability of aquaglyceroporins and Aqp8 exhibits significant diversity, systematic evaluations of their activity within species are limited.

Minimizing Stress in White Sharks: Non-Invasive Epidermal Biopsies for Isotopic and Vitellogenin Analyses [PDF]

open access: yesBiology
The great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias), a keystone predator vital to marine ecosystem stability, is increasingly exposed to anthropogenic threats, including endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs).

First evidence of white sharks, Carcharodon carcharias, in the tongue of the ocean, central Bahamas

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
The white shark, Carcharodon carcharias, is an iconic apex predator, playing an important ecological role across its range. Persistent bycatch and overfishing led to white shark declines, but recent studies in the North Western Atlantic (NWA) revealed ...

A previously overlooked, highly diverse early Pleistocene elasmobranch assemblage from southern Taiwan [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2022
The Niubu fossil locality in Chiayi County, southern Taiwan is best known for its rich early Pleistocene marine fossils that provide insights into the poorly understood past diversity in the area.
