Whitney maps-a non-metric case [PDF]

open access: yesColloquium Mathematicum, 2000
Summary: It is shown that there is no Whitney map on the hyperspace \(2^X\) for non-metrizable Hausdorff compact spaces \(X\). The authors present examples of non-metrizable continua \(X\) which admit and such which do not admit a Whitney map for \(C(X)\).

Lagrange mappings of the first open Whitney umbrella [PDF]

open access: yesPacific Journal of Mathematics, 2002
A Lagrange variety of a symplectic manifold \(E\) of dimension \(2n\) is a subset \(\Lambda\) of \(E\) that admits a statification into strata of dimension at most \(n\) such that the symplectic form of \(E\) vanishes on each of the strata. Given a Lagrange variety \(\Lambda\subset E\), two Lagrange fibrations \(\pi, \pi':E\to Y\) over a smooth ...

Group-Twisted Alexander-Whitney and Eilenberg-Zilber Maps [PDF]

open access: yesAlgebras and Representation Theory, 2020
We define group-twisted Alexander-Whitney and Eilenberg-Zilber maps for converting between bimodule resolutions of skew group algebras. These algebras are the natural semidirect products recording actions of finite groups by automorphisms. The group-twisted chain maps allow us to transfer information between resolutions for use in homology theories ...

Returning to Learning: What are the academic development needs of mature and part-time students? What works to support and retain these students?

open access: yesJournal of Learning Development in Higher Education, 2014
This paper considers issues around the support and retention of mature and part-time (MaP) students. It analyses the specific academic development needs of MaP students based on Wenger’s model of learning (1998) which puts the academic ...

Extending generalized Whitney maps [PDF]

open access: yesArchivum Mathematicum, 2017
For metrizable continua, there exists the well-known notion of a Whitney map. If X is a nonempty, compact, and metric space, then any Whitney map for any closed subset of 2X can be extended to a Whitney map for 2X [3, 16.10 Theorem]. The main purpose of this paper is to prove some generalizations of this theorem.

Whitney theorem for complex polynomial mappings [PDF]

open access: yesMathematische Zeitschrift, 2019
We describe the topology of a general polynomial mapping $F=(f, g):X\to\Bbb C^2$, where $X$ is a complex plane or a complex sphere.

Whitney regularity of the image of the Chevalley mapping [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society of Edinburgh: Section A Mathematics, 2016
A compact set K ⊂ ℝn is Whitney 1-regular if the geodesic distance in K is equivalent to the Euclidean distance. Let P be the Chevalley map defined by an integrity basis of the algebra of polynomials invariant by a reflection group. This paper gives the Whitney 1-regularity of the image by P of any closed ball centred at the origin.
