The impact of genome triplication on tandem gene evolution in Brassica rapa
Whole genome duplication (WGD) and tandem duplication (TD) are both important modes of gene expansion. However, how whole genome duplication influences tandemly duplicated genes is not well studied.

On the origins of Mendelian disease genes in man: the impact of gene duplication [PDF]
Over 3,000 human diseases are known to be linked to heritable genetic variation, mapping to over 1,700 unique genes. Dating of the evolutionary age of these disease-associated genes has suggested that they have a tendency to be ancient, specifically ...

Rearrangement Rate following the Whole-Genome Duplication in Teleosts [PDF]
It is now clear that a whole-genome duplication (WGD) occurred at the base of the teleost fish lineage. Like the other anciently polyploid genomes investigated so far, teleost genomes now behave like diploids with chromosomes forming pairs at meiosis. The diploidization process is currently poorly understood.

A case of recurrent epilepsy-associated rosette-forming glioneuronal tumor with anaplastic transformation in the absence of therapy. [PDF]
Rosette-forming glioneuronal tumor (RGNT) most commonly occurs adjacent to the fourth ventricle and therefore rarely presents with epilepsy. Recent reports describe RGNT occurrence in other anatomical locations with considerable morphologic and genetic ...

Whole Genome Duplications and Contracted Breakpoint Graphs
The genome halving problem, motivated by the whole genome duplication events in molecular evolution, was solved by El-Mabrouk and Sankoff in the pioneering paper [SIAM J. Comput., 32 (2003), pp. 754-792]. The El-Mabrouk-Sankoff algorithm is rather complex, inspiring a quest for a simpler solution.

Implementation of non-invasive prenatal testing by semiconductor sequencing in a genetic laboratory [PDF]
Objectives: To implement non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) for fetal aneuploidies with semiconductor sequencing in an academic cytogenomic laboratory and to evaluate the first 15-month experience on clinical samples.

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Gene duplication and an accelerated evolutionary rate in 11S globulin genes are associated with higher protein synthesis in dicots as compared to monocots [PDF]
Background: Seed storage proteins are a major source of dietary protein, and the content of such proteins determines both the quantity and quality of crop yield.

This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.
