Deploying a middleware architecture for next generation mobile systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Although 2G systems quite adequately cater for voice communications, today demand is for high-speed access to data centric applications and multimedia.

Unified force law for granular impact cratering

open access: yes, 2007
Experiments on the low-speed impact of solid objects into granular media have been used both to mimic geophysical events and to probe the unusual nature of the granular state of matter.

Sex-Specific Correlates of Walking Speed in a Wide Age-Ranged Population [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journals of Gerontology Series B: Psychological Sciences and Social Sciences, 2010
The goals of this cross-sectional study were to explore correlates of walking speed in a large wide age-ranged population and to identify factors affecting lower walking speed at older ages. Participants were 3,872 community-dwelling adults in the first follow-up of the SardiNIA study who completed a 4-m walking test. Sex-specific correlates of walking

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Optimal Control Strategy of Five-Phase PMSMs in a Wide Speed Range Using Third Harmonics

open access: yesInternational Transactions on Electrical Energy Systems
The utilization of the third current harmonic in five-phase motors offers the potential to enhance their performance. This paper presents a comprehensive theory for optimally controlling five-phase permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) across all ...

Efficient tight-binding Monte Carlo structural sampling of complex materials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
While recent work towards the development of tight-binding and ab-initio algorithms has focused on molecular dynamics, Monte Carlo methods can often lead to better results with relatively little effort.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

All-in-one self-powered wind speed sensor with a wide start-up range and high output power

open access: yesAPL Materials
Anemometers play an important role in environmental monitoring in remote and unique locations, such as forests, islands, and mines. Self-powered wind speed sensors offer a solution for long-term reliable monitoring in unmanned environments.
