Anatomical description of the jaw muscles and theoretical bite force assessment in South American opossums using manual and digital dissection methods

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
Manual and virtual dissections were employed to examine the masticatory muscle architecture and bite force of three South American marsupials. The organisation of the muscles differed between species, with predicted bite forces exceeding previous estimates.

The impact of alignment and scaling on biological inferences from landmark‐free morphometrics

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
Landmark‐free morphometrics promises advancements in shape quantification for biology, but widespread adoption is hampered by concerns over reproducibility. We compare 3D mesh alignment and scaling protocols on a prominent landmark‐free approach, Deterministic Atlas Analysis, finding inconsistencies in centroid size distribution and variance structure.

The addition of clotrimazole reduces but does not abrogate fungal dysbiosis during effective antibacterial therapy for canine otitis externa

open access: yesJournal of Small Animal Practice, EarlyView.
Objectives Malassezia dysbiosis commonly occurs after successful piperacillin‐tazobactam monotherapy for canine bacterial otitis externa. The study objective was to compare antimicrobial outcomes in dogs with otitis treated with piperacillin‐tazobactam in combination with the antifungal drug clotrimazole with a previous cohort treated with piperacillin‐

Quantitative Pharmacodynamic Analysis of Trimethoprim‐Sulfonamide Combination Activity Against Staphylococcus pseudintermedius

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Trimethoprim (TMP)‐sulfonamide combinations are widely used in veterinary medicine, yet the quantitative nature of their pharmacodynamic interaction remains incompletely characterised. This study investigated the interaction between TMP and sulfamethoxazole (SMX), sulfadiazine (SDZ) and sulfadimethoxine (SDMX) against two Staphylococcus ...

Balancing Risk and Reward: Red Fox Exploitation of Kill Sites in a Wolf‐Occupied Landscape

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, EarlyView.
Wolves are recolonising the European Alps, and the carcasses they leave behind are a valuable food source for smaller carnivores. Using camera traps at 26 wolf‐killed red deer carcasses in Stelvio National Park, we found that red foxes visited every carcass and timed their visits according to how much meat was left, rather than to whether wolves were ...

Molecular confirmation of Leishmania infantum infection in the sand fly vector Phlebotomus neglectus (Diptera: Phlebotominae) in Slovenia

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
Leishmania DNA was confirmed in phlebotomine sand flies collected in Slovenia. Molecular analyses confirmed Leishmania infantum in a pool of Phlebotomus neglectus females with a high parasite DNA load. The findings indicate potential conditions for local transmission and support continued entomological surveillance.

“Dogs make people human:” Toward a tender interspecies understanding in Sigrid Nunez's The Friend (2018)

open access: yesOrbis Litterarum, EarlyView.
Abstract The critical and popular appeal of Sigrid Nunez's The Friend (2018), which centers on the bond between an unnamed female writer and a Great Dane, Apollo, suggests that readers are drawn to thoughtful explorations of human–animal encounters in literature.

Understanding exosomes in regenerative dentistry

open access: yesPeriodontology 2000, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Regenerative dentistry is shifting from cell‐based strategies to cell‐free biologics capable of orchestrating intricate tissue repair. Exosomes, nanosized extracellular vesicles carrying bioactive molecular payloads, have emerged as central modulators of intercellular communication.
