Infectious Sinusitis in Wild Turkeys

SUMMARY Three sick wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) from Cumberland Island, Georgia, were both serologically positive and culturepositive for Mycoplasma gallisepticunm. Clinical signs and lesions in affected birds were typical of infectious sinusitis. This is the first report of the isolation of M. gallisepticum from wild turkeys.

CAPILLARIASIS IN PENNED WILD TURKEYS

Capillariasis caused by Capillaria annulata was associated with dilated crops, emaciation and mortality of 23 juvenile wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) in a captive flock. Gross lesions in the crops ranged from slithtly-thickened lining folds to a thick necrotic diphtheritic membrane covering the entire inside surface.

ORGANOPHOSPHATE TOXICITY IN WILD TURKEYS

An accidental poisoning of wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) by O,O-Diethyl O-[p-(methylsulfinyl) phenyl] phosphorothioate is reported. Diagnosis was achieved by history, clinical observations, postmortem lesions, diagnostic therapy and pesticide analysis.

Avian Tuberculosis in a Wild Turkey

A liver from a hunter-harvested wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) from Kansas was evaluated by the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study. Grossly, the liver contained several grayish-white masses ranging from 0.5-3 cm in diameter. These masses were scattered throughout the parenchyma and bulged from the capsular surface.

Mycoplasma Gallopavonis in Eastern Wild Turkeys

Serum samples and tracheal cultures were collected from eastern wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo sylvestris) trapped for relocation in South Carolina (USA) during 1985 to 1990. Sera were tested for Mycoplasma gallisepticum and M. synoviae by the rapid plate agglutination and hemagglutination inhibition tests and were found to be negative.

HISTOMONIASIS IN WILD TURKEYS IN MISSISSIPPI

Blackhead (histomoniasis, enterohepatitis) was diagnosed as the cause of death for three wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) found in widely separated areas in Mississippi. The turkeys came from areas with high turkey population densities and supplemental feeding programs.
