Impacts of local human activities on the Antarctic environment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
We review the scientific literature, especially from the past decade, on the impacts of human activities on the Antarctic environment. A range of impacts has been identified at a variety of spatial and temporal scales.

Disordered but rhythmic—the role of intrinsic protein disorder in eukaryotic circadian timing

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Unstructured domains known as intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) are present in nearly every part of the eukaryotic core circadian oscillator. IDRs enable many diverse inter‐ and intramolecular interactions that support clock function. IDR conformations are highly tunable by post‐translational modifications and environmental conditions, which ...

Function‐driven design of a surrogate interleukin‐2 receptor ligand

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Interleukin (IL)‐2 signaling can be achieved and precisely fine‐tuned through the affinity, distance, and orientation of the heterodimeric receptors with their ligands. We designed a biased IL‐2 surrogate ligand that selectively promotes effector T and natural killer cell activation and differentiation. Interleukin (IL) receptors play a pivotal role in

Mountain & Alpine Medicine

open access: yesDeutsche Zeitschrift für Sportmedizin, 2020
Accidents during mountaineering are special because mountain rescue operations are time-consuming and material-intensive. Since even in Europe it takes a long time for professional help to reach the injured person, first aid rugulary has to be provided ...

Time after time – circadian clocks through the lens of oscillator theory

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Oscillator theory bridges physics and circadian biology. Damped oscillators require external drivers, while limit cycles emerge from delayed feedback and nonlinearities. Coupling enables tissue‐level coherence, and entrainment aligns internal clocks with environmental cues.

Extreme travel medicine

open access: yesFamily Medicine & Primary Care Review, 2020
Extreme travel may be defined as participating in high-risk sports activities in a remote destination. These destinations may either be in developing countries or in the wilderness of a developed country as well.

Review of Backpacking with the Saints: Wilderness Hiking as Spiritual Practice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
This review shows how all journeys are not futile; how human frailty makes us holy, in a certain sense. This review shows the great depth of the sovereignty of the Good. And how Professor Lane shows us that while all feet are clay; some realise so and go
