Knowledge Engineering for Wind Energy

open access: yesWind Energy Science
Abstract. With the rapid evolution of the wind energy sector, there is an ever-increasing need to create value from the vast amounts of data made available both from within the domain, as well as from other sectors. This article addresses the challenges faced by wind energy domain experts in converting data into domain knowledge, connecting and ...

Pseudo-2D RANS: A LiDAR-driven mid-fidelity model for simulations of wind farm flows [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Next-generation models of wind farm flows are increasingly needed to assist the design, operation, and performance diagnostic of modern wind power plants. Accuracy in the descriptions of the wind farm aerodynamics, including the effects of atmospheric stability, coalescing wakes, and the pressure field induced by the turbine rotors, and low ...

Network topology drives population temporal variability in experimental habitat networks

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
Habitat patches connected by dispersal pathways form habitat networks. We explored how network topology affects population outcomes in laboratory experiments using a model species (Daphnia carinata). Central habitat nodes in complex lattice networks exhibited lower temporal variability in population sizes, suggesting they support more stable ...

Engineering-Based Tornado Damage Assessment: Numerical Tool for Assessing Tornado Vulnerability of Residential Structures

open access: yesFrontiers in Built Environment, 2020
Following a series of deadly tornadoes between 2011 and 2013, this paper develops a numerical tool to help communities better predict and quantify the potential tornado damage to single-family residential structures from a tornado strike.

Particle acceleration in galactic wind bubbles [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
Winds are ubiquitous in galaxies and often feature bubble structures. These wind bubbles are characterized by an external forward shock expanding in the surrounding medium and a wind termination shock separating the cool and fast wind from the hot shocked wind.

Refining the NaV1.7 pharmacophore of a class of venom‐derived peptide inhibitors via a combination of in silico screening and rational engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Venom peptides have shown promise in treating pain. Our study uses computer screening to identify a peptide that targets a sodium channel (NaV1.7) linked to chronic pain. We produced the peptide in the laboratory and refined its design, advancing the search for innovative pain therapies.

Wind tunnel tests of tent halls of different shape

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2017
Aerodynamic investigations of wind pressure distribution on the surfaces of models of tent halls were carried out in the boundary layer wind tunnel at the Cracow University of Technology.

Identification of novel small molecule inhibitors of ETS transcription factors

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
ETS transcription factors play an essential role in tumourigenesis and are indispensable for sprouting angiogenesis, a hallmark of cancer, which fuels tumour expansion and dissemination. Thus, targeting ETS transcription factor function could represent an effective, multifaceted strategy to block tumour growth. The evolutionarily conserved E‐Twenty‐Six

Aerodynamic mitigation of low-rise building with complex roof geometry

open access: yesFrontiers in Built Environment, 2023
During strong wind events, building roofs are subjected to high wind uplift forces (suctions), which often lead to severe roofing component damage, or even roof total failure, flying debris, and water intrusion, hence, interior damages.

Numerical investigation of the effect of crosswind on sound propagation outdoors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The effect of wind on sound propagation in the atmosphere has been studied extensively before with an emphasize on downwind sound propagation, typically representing worst-case scenarios.
