Retrieval of Meso-Scale Wind Field: Simulation and Performance for Wind

Coherent Laser Radar, 1995
Meso-scale meteorology received an increased interest in the past decade and prompts new studies supported by both experimental and modeling works. In the frame of this effort the scientific communities in France and Germany proposed to developed the WIND project (1) to fly an airborne Doppler lidar.

Ocean wind field retrieval using ENVISAT ASAR data

IGARSS 2003. 2003 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. Proceedings (IEEE Cat. No.03CH37477), 2004
In the last years several algorithms for high-resolution ocean surface wind field retrieval from space borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) have been developed. These algorithms were specially designed for the C-band SARs aboard the European satellites ERS-1 and ERS-2 operating at vertical (VV) polarization in transmit and receive and the Canadian ...

A Gradient Wind Correction for Surface Pressure Fields Retrieved from Scatterometer Winds

Journal of Applied Meteorology, 2002
Given a field of geostrophic winds and at least one pressure observation, a pressure field can be computed. If the winds are in reality gradient winds, then a correction must be applied to calculate the actual geostrophic winds. Here a method is proposed for including a gradient wind correction in the retrieval of geostrophic winds from Quick ...

Wind Field Retrieval and Display for Doppler Radar Data

2008
Doppler radars are useful facilities for weather data gathering. In this paper, we propose a visualization pipeline to extract and display horizontal wind fields for Doppler radar data. At first, the input radar data are filtered with adaptive filters to reduce noise and enhance features.

The use of RADARSAT-1 SAR data for operational wind field retrieval

IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2003
A key parameter necessary for interpreting radar images of marine areas is surface wind speed. Knowledge of the wind speed during and after data acquisition can aid significantly with the image interpretation for applications such as oil slick detection and ship detection.

Wind Field Retrieving for SCAT Onboard CFOSAT Based on PCA Method

IGARSS 2018 - 2018 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2018
The scatterometer (SCAT) onboard China France Oceanography Satellite (CFOSAT) will be the first scanning scatterometer with rotating fan-beams. Wind retrieving methods for existed scatterometers, which are with rotating pencil beams or fixed fan beams, are needed to be modified considering efficiency in information extraction from the numerous ...

Comparison of RADARSAT-1 SAR retrieved wind fields to numerical models

IGARSS 2003. 2003 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. Proceedings (IEEE Cat. No.03CH37477), 2004
An algorithm is introduced and verified, which is designed to retrieve high-resolution wind fields from C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) operating at both vertical and horizontal polarization. SAR wind retrieval is a two-step process: In the first, step wind directions are ex- tracted from wind-induced streaks, which have a typical spacing of 200 ...

Evaluation of an operational SAR wind field retrieval algorithm for ENVISAT ASAR

IEEE International IEEE International IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2004. IGARSS '04. Proceedings. 2004, 2004
The operational algorithm WiSAR is introduced, which enables to extract high-resolution ocean surface wind fields from satellite borne synthetic aperture radars (SARs) on a fully operational basis. WiSAR can be applied to SAR data acquired in C-band at either vertical (VV) or horizontal (HH) polarization in transmit and receive from the European ...

Wind field retrieval under high wind conditions by combined scatterometer and radiometer data

SPIE Proceedings, 2007
With the availability of scatterometer data, surface wind vectors can be estimated from the backscatter measurement over oceans, guarantee global, long-term monitoring of the winds on the oceans, which make them very valuable for climate studies and other applications.

The VIERS radar backscatter model development for wind field retrieval

Proceedings of IGARSS '94 - 1994 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2005
Traditionally, the operational retrieval algorithms for scatterometers relating the radar backscatter measurements to surface wind vectors have been empirical. Since, however, the backscatter reflects in some way the state of the high frequency waves, the assumption that the backscatter only depends on the local wind speed may be questioned.
