Assessment of CYGNSS Wind Speed Retrieval Uncertainty

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing, 2019
Measurements of near surface wind speed made by the Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) constellation of GNSS-R satellites are evaluated and their uncertainty is assessed in two ways. A bottom-up assessment begins with a model for the error in engineering measurements and propagates that error through the wind speed retrieval algorithm ...

Simultaneous Wind and Rain Retrieval Using SeaWinds Data [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2004
The SeaWinds scatterometers onboard the QuikSCAT and the Advanced Earth Observing Satellite 2 measure ocean winds on a global scale via the relationship between the normalized radar backscattering cross section of the ocean and the vector wind.

Outlook for a new wind field retrieval technique: The 4D-Var wind retrieval

2014 International Radar Conference, 2014
In this paper we introduce the 4D-Var wind retrieval, which is inspired on four-dimensional variational assimilation, typically used in numerical weather models. We simulate simple wind scenarios, with single or double vortices, to get insight in radar measurements. We apply the linear wind model to radar measurements of IDRA radar measurements and ...

QuikSCAT wind retrievals for tropical cyclones

IGARSS 2003. 2003 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. Proceedings (IEEE Cat. No.03CH37477), 2003
The use of QuikSCAT data for wind retrievals of tropical cyclones is described. The evidence of QuikSCAT sigma-0 dependence on wind direction for >30 m/s wind speeds is presented. The QuikSCAT sigma-0s show a peak-to-peak wind direction modulation of /spl sim/1 dB at 35 m/s wind speed, and the amplitude of modulation decreases with wind speed.

Wind retrieval with an assimilation method

SPIE Proceedings, 2007
In the study of radar wind field retrieval with variational assimilation method, the simple adjoint models have merits of simplifying calculation, saving time and improving efficiency. This paper studies wind field retrieval on levels of different height using the reflectivity advection equation as the control equation, proposes the parameterization ...
