A comparison of models for retrieving high wind speeds

2007 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2007
Based on polarization ratio from ENVISAT ASAR, we compared the wind vectors retrieved from CMOD5 with alpha= 0.6, alpha = 0.5, our polarization ratio,VV HWGMF with our polarization ratio and HH HWGMF with results from QuikSCAT and buoy, respectively. We found that CMOD5 with alpha= 0.5 polarization ratio is best one for retrieving high wind speed from ...

A Novel Approach to SAR Ocean Wind Retrieval

IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2019
A novel approach to a Bayesian ocean wind retrieval from high-range bandwidth synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data is demonstrated and validated using global Sentinel-1 (S1) A and B WV data acquired in October 2016 and January 2017. These spectral parameters are defined from the full-resolution image cross spectra.

Preliminary Evaluation of Sentinel-1A Wind Speed Retrievals

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing, 2016
The accuracy of wind speed retrievals from synthetic aperture radars (SARs) is strongly dependent upon the accuracy of the normalized radar cross section measurement. Here, we make a preliminary assessment of wind speed retrievals from Sentinel-1A. In particular, we use Sentinel-1A SAR imagery to compute wind speed at 500-m resolution.

Improved Ultrahigh-Resolution Wind Retrieval for RapidScat

IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2019
This paper introduces RapidScat 2.5-km ultrahigh-resolution (UHR) wind estimation and validates it in near-coastal regions. RapidScat UHR wind estimation provides finer resolution ocean wind vector fields than conventional 12.5-km level 2B (L2B) wind products at a cost of higher noise.

The effects of wave breaking on scatterometer wind retrieval

2016 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2016
Space-borne scatterometers are the main tools to retrieve wind vector over global oceans. However, wave breaking under high-wind condition has strong effects on scatterometer. In this paper, the effects of wave breaking on scatterometer normalized radar cross section (NRCS) were analyzed using a semi-empirical model.

The Effects of Wind Transfer Error on Current Retrieval

IGARSS 2019 - 2019 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2019
The simultaneous measurements of ocean surface current and wind have attracted considerable interest. Since they are closely coupled at sea surface, wind errors (speed and direction) have a transfer effect on current retrieval. In this paper we investigate the effects of wind transfer error on current retrieval for a Doppler scattterometer.

Wind retrieval with cross-polarized SAR returns

2011 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2011
Scatterometry is an important means of global wind measurements in the ocean. The standard spatial resolution of scatterometers is typically about 25 km, and because of the contamination from the much stronger land scatter of antenna side lobes, ocean wind sensing in the coastal regions within several tens of kilometers from the shoreline are ...

A wind direction extension based algorithm for scatterometer wind vector retrieval

2012 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2012
According to the lower efficiency and larger wind direction errors in the nadir region of the swath, a new combined wind retrieval algorithm is proposed for conically scanning scatterometer in this paper. The presented algorithm has the dual advantages of both higher efficiency and higher wind direction retrieval accuracy by combining the wind speed ...

Water Surface Backscattering and Wind Retrieval

2013
Many researchers have been investigating the microwave backscattering signatures of water surface and solving the problem of remote measuring of wind speed and direction over water (Bentamy et al. 2012; Carswell et al. 1994; Chelton and McCabe 1985; Feindt et al. 1986; Giovanangeli et al. 1991; Hildebrand 1994; Long 2001; Masuko et al.

Wave and wind retrieval from sar images of the ocean

Annales Des Télécommunications, 2001
Over the past few years, recognition of the importance of the coastal zone has led to the establishment of international programmes for monitoring the coastal zone environment and its change. The European programme marsais is part of this effort. One important component of such actions aims to better predict the sea surface wind and wave dynamics in ...
