Understanding wind stress (drag) over the ocean is central to many facets of air-sea interaction, which in turn is vital for models of weather prediction and climate modelling. Wind Stress over the Ocean, first published in 2001, brings together thirty of the world's leading experts in air-sea interaction, under the auspices of the Scientific Committee

On Climatological Monthly Mean Wind Stress and Wind Stress Curl Fields over the World Ocean
Journal of Climate, 1989Abstract Using a version of the global surface marine observation historical data set, a new 1° spatial resolution global ocean surface wind stress climatology has been evaluated using the Large and Pond surface drag coefficient formulation. These new results are compared, after spatial smoothing, with those of Hellerman and Rosenstein, who used a ...

Altimeter Wind and Wind-Stress Algorithms—Further Refinement and Validation
Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology, 1994Abstract An altimeter wind algorithm that was proposed earlier and deduced on the basis of microwave specular reflections from the sea surface is discussed. This algorithm is further tuned overall with buoy-measured winds; it is refined at low winds ( 9.6 m s−1) with tower and airborne observations.
