Field Measurements of Wind Turbine Wakes with Lidars [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology, 2013
AbstractField measurements of the wake flow produced from a 2-MW Enercon E-70 wind turbine were performed using three scanning Doppler wind lidars. A GPS-based technique was used to determine the position of the wind turbine and the wind lidar locations, as well as the direction of the laser beams.

The dynamic coupling between the pulse wake mixing strategy and floating wind turbines [PDF]

open access: yesWind Energy Science, 2023
In recent years, control techniques such as dynamic induction control (often referred to as “the pulse”) have shown great potential in increasing wake mixing, with the goal of minimising turbine-to-turbine interaction within a wind farm.

MULTIFRACTAL ANALYSIS OF A WAKE FOR A SINGLE WIND TURBINE [PDF]

open access: yesTopical Problems of Fluid Mechanics 2017, 2017
Wind energy is an important component of renewable energy sources. Studying of turbulent wakes for wind turbines and interactions with Atmospheric Boundary Layer is an urgent problem. The theory of chaos and fractal geometry with some research in fluid dynamics will change profoundly the scope of complex scale to scale transport in theory of turbulence,

High-resolution CFD modelling of Lillgrund Wind farm [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We report on a fully dynamic simulation of Vattenfall’s Lillgrund offshore Wind Farm, with a focus on the wake effects of turbines on the performance of individual turbines, and of the farm as a whole. The model uses a dynamic representation of a wind ...

Experimental investigation of wind turbine wake and load dynamics during yaw maneuvers [PDF]

open access: yesWind Energy Science, 2021
This article investigates the far wake response of a yawing upstream wind turbine and its impact on the global load variation in a downstream wind turbine.

Aeroelastic load validation in wake conditions using nacelle-mounted lidar measurements [PDF]

open access: yesWind Energy Science, 2020
We propose a method for carrying out wind turbine load validation in wake conditions using measurements from forward-looking nacelle lidars. Two lidars, a pulsed- and a continuous-wave system, were installed on the nacelle of a 2.3 MW wind turbine

Coalescing Wind Turbine Wakes

open access: yesJournal of Physics: Conference Series, 2015
A team of researchers from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Statoil used large-eddy simulations to numerically investigate the merging wakes from upstream offshore wind turbines. Merging wakes are typical phenomena in wind farm flows in which neighboring turbine wakes consolidate to form complex flow patterns that are as yet not well ...

Wake steering of multirotor wind turbines [PDF]

open access: yesWind Energy, 2021
Abstract In this paper, wake steering is applied to multirotor turbines to determine whether it has the potential to reduce wind plant wake losses. Through application of rotor yaw to multirotor turbines, a new degree of freedom is introduced to wind farm control such that wakes can be expanded, channelled or redirected to improve ...

Interaction of an Eulerian flue gas plume with wind turbines [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The reduced availability of sites with the requisite wind resource, planning permission and public acceptance for the placement of wind turbines poses a significant challenge to future expansion of the wind energy industry.

Stability of Floating Wind Turbine Wakes

open access: yesJournal of Physics: Conference Series, 2021
Abstract Floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) are the next frontier in offshore wind energy, allowing exploration of deep-water regions previously unavailable to fixed-foundation turbines. Since offshore turbines operate in lower turbulence levels, the intrinsic hydrodynamic unstable modes of the tip vortices can have even more ...
