Minimizing Adverse Environmental Impact: How Murky the Waters

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal, 2002
The withdrawal of water from the nation’s waterways to cool industrial facilities kills billions of adult, juvenile, and larval fish each year. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) promulgation of categorical rules defining the best technology ...

Heavy quark production at HERA and the LHC

open access: yes, 2005
Measurements of heavy quark production, particularly from HERA, their theoretical understanding and their relevance for the LHC are reviewed. The status of beauty and charm production is discussed in the context of the different components of the ...

Biobased Bionic Spider Silk via Electrostatic Complexation for Simultaneously Harvesting Atmospheric Water and Triboelectric Energy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐based bionic spider silk and spider web are first prepared using polyelectrolyte complexation technique for the simultaneous harvesting of water and triboelectric energy. The advantage of this process lies on entirely bio‐based materials, fully green water‐processable procedures, extremely high production rate (99.36%), excellent fog harvesting ...

Gene expression and morphogenesis during the deposition of Drosophila wing cuticle

open access: yesFly, 2017
The exoskeleton of insects and other arthropods is a very versatile material that is characterized by a complex multilayer structure. In Sobala and Adler (2016) we analyzed the process of wing cuticle deposition by RNAseq and electron microscopy. In this

The Flying Diamond: A joined aircraft configuration design project, volume 1 [PDF]

open access: yes
The results of the analysis conducted on the Joined Wing Configuration study are presented. The joined wing configuration employs a conventional fuselage and incorporates two wings joined together near their tips to form a diamond shape in both plan view

Block Copolymers: Emerging Building Blocks for Additive Manufacturing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This review addresses how block copolymer (BCP) physics and rheology have led to the widespread use of BCPs in advanced additive manufacturing techniques, with particular emphasis on the untapped potential of these nanostructured materials toward achieving multi‐scale architected materials with unique, programmable material properties.

Structural Porosity and Low Mineral Density in Enamel Rods Drive Molar Incisor Hypomineralisation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study uses advanced imaging modalities on multiple length scales to show that molar‐incisor hypomineralization does not present as a locally homogeneous pathology. Instead, microstructural defects, characterized through non‐mineralized, protein‐rich sheaths and an altered mineral structure in between prism rods, resulting in local differences in ...

Upper Surface Nacelle Influence on SCAR Aerodynamic Characteristics at Transonic Speeds [PDF]

open access: yes
The arrow-wing transport configuration with detached engines located over the wing to produce upper surface exhaust flow effects was tested at angles of attack from -4 deg to 8 deg and jet total-pressure ratios from 1 (Jet off) to approximately 10.

Near‐Infrared Light‐Programmable Negative Differential Transconductance in Organic Electrochemical Transistors for Reconfigurable Logic

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Organic electrochemical transistors based on a Near‐Infrared (NIR)‐responsive polymer p(C4DPP‐T) and iodide electrolyte exhibit optically programmable negative differential transconductance. NIR illumination triggers an iodine‐mediated redox process, enabling a transition from binary to ternary conductance states within a single‐layer device.

Optimum PID Control of Multi-wing Attractors in A Family of Lorenz-like Chaotic Systems

open access: yes, 2012
Multi-wing chaotic attractors are highly complex nonlinear dynamical systems with higher number of index-2 equilibrium points. Due to the presence of several equilibrium points, randomness of the state time series for these multi-wing chaotic systems is ...
