WINTER HARDINESS EVALUATION IN ALFALFA
Canadian Journal of Plant Science, 1960A study was undertaken to determine the relationship between carbohydrate content in the roots of alfalfa varieties in the fall and winter hardiness of the varieties. Several agronomic characters were also considered in relation to winter hardiness. Winter injury was found to be inversely proportional to the hexosan content.

Sources of winter hardiness in wild lentil
Genetic Resources and Crop Evolution, 1996In high altitude areas (> c. 850 m elevation) in west Asia and north Africa, lentil (Lens culinaris) is grown as a spring crop to avoid severe winter cold. But late fall-sown lentil with winter hardiness has higher yield potential in these areas. In this study a total of 245 accessions of wild lentil, 10 of cultivated lentil and three accessions of ...

1. Woody outdoor seedlings of guayule not yet unacclimated to low temperatures survived only slightly lower temperatures than did very succulent greenhouse plants of the same age. 2. The rate of cooling, preceding an extended exposure to low temperatures, did not appreciably alter the resistance of the plant to frost injury. 3.

The determination of winter-hardiness in oats
The Journal of Agricultural Science, 1934When assessing the value of any variety of a commercial plant one is concerned with a number of different features of the plant's behaviour, among others winter-hardiness. The behaviour with regard to most of these features is tested by methods which have been carefully planned and whose reliability has been proved, but the determination of winter ...

Revealing Hereditary Variation of Winter Hardiness in Cereals
Russian Journal of Genetics, 2004A set of cereal crops and differentiating cultivars was shown to be of utility for identifying the major abiotic factors that limit the survival of winter crops in the cold season of a particular year. With this approach, the season was identified (1997-1998, Belgorod) when the survival of cereals depended on the tolerance to anaerobiosis rather than ...

Winter hardiness in trench celery
Euphytica, 1967A total of 51 red and white commercial varieties of trench celery were grown and examined for winter hardiness at the National Vegetable Research Station. Although some plants of most varieties survived the winter, none showed a commercially useful degree of winter hardiness, in that none were marketable after moderate frost.

Perennial grasses are vital for Norwegian agricultural production. The nature and extent of winter damage on grasslands is highly dependent on climatic conditions, and determines both persistency and yield. Physical stresses such as frost and ice encasement predominate in coastal regions with an unstable winter climate, while biotic stresses such as ...

The inheritance of winter hardiness in Pisum I
Euphytica, 1966An F3 hybrid population of the cross Early Perfection x Austrian Winter peas was fall planted at East Lansing, Michigan. The segregates that overwintered indicated that hardiness is inherited independently from other phenotypic characteristics. Thus, the possibility exists that the winter hardy character can be transferred from the Austrian Winter pea ...

Winter hardiness in marginal populations of timothy
Euphytica, 1994A comprehensive collection of local fodder grass populations was carried out in the northern regions of Norway in 1972 and 1973. The main purpose was to find ecotypes with extreme winter hardiness. This paper gives results from experiments carried out with some of the timothy populations collected.
