Combining ability analysis for harvest index in winter wheat

Cereal breeders have used harvest index (HI) as a selection criterion in segregating generations to identify physiologically superior lines with improved partitioning of total assimilate into grain. Information on combining ability for HI of the hard red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars of the Southern Great Plains is not available.

The nature of gene action through combining ability analysis for grain yield and its components was studied in 5 X 5 diallel cross of sorghum. Estimates of gea and sca indicated the influence of both additive and non additive gene action for the inheritance of grain yield, stem girth and plant height.

Wheat vernalization and photoperiod genes influence adaptation by regulating the timing of the transition from vegetative to reproductive growth to protect the floral meristem from cold temperatures.

Sixty-seven F1 winter wheat hybrids (Triticum aestivum) between eight cytoplasmic male sterile (cms) lines with T. timopheevi cytoplasm and 10 fertility restoration (Rf) lines carrying restoration genes from T. timopheevi, T. spelta and T. aestivum ’Primepi’ were analyzed for male sterility and grain yield in a field trial.
