CUTTING PARAMETERS AND SURFACE CHARACTERISTICS OF WIRE EDM [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Conference on Aerospace Sciences and Aviation Technology, 1999
Electric discharge wire cutting (EDWC), or wire EDM, is a special form of electric discharge machining that uses a small diameter wire as an electrode to cut a narrow kerf in the workpiece. The cutting action in wire EDM is achieved by thermal energy resulting from electric discharge between the electrode wire and the workpiece.

Tailoring Laser Powder Bed Fusion and Post‐Processing Parameters for JIS SKD61 Tool Steels: Surface Roughness, Microstructure, and Mechanical Properties

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
Laser powder bed fusion of JIS SKD61 tool steel is systematically optimized using a Taguchi design and ANOVA. Hatch spacing and layer thickness are identified as dominant parameters controlling surface roughness and tensile strength. Subsequent tempering at 600°C improves microstructural stability and mechanical performance, enabling high‐density SKD61

Toward the Application of Multiaxial Failure Criteria: Mean Stress Sensitivity of Carbide‐Rich, High‐Alloy PM‐HIP Tool Steels Under Axial and Torsional Cyclic Loading

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
This study quantifies axial and torsional long‐life fatigue (LLF) behavior of three carbide‐rich PM‐HIP tool steels, correlating LLF strength with intrinsic defect size and cleanliness, thereby extracting material‐specific mean stress sensitivities and Haigh diagrams.

Effect of Double Annealing on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of a Medium Manganese Steel

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
A double intercritical annealing strategy is proposed to tailor the multiphase microstructure and mechanical response of a medium‐Mn steel. The treatment produces an ultrafine mixture of ferrite, martensite and multiple austenite populations with graded thermal and mechanical stability, formed through austenite reversion and controlled retransformation.

Unraveling the Power of Disorder: A Bioinspired Cuttlebone Structure With Superior Strength, Energy Absorption and Isotropy

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 43, 3 August 2026.
Cuttlebone‐inspired architected metamaterials introduce controlled structural disorder to simultaneously enhance strength, energy absorption, and compressive stability. Tunable disorder suppresses shear anisotropy, outperforms periodic lattices, and establishes discrete randomness as a robust route to high‐performance lightweight mechanical ...

Strength–Ductility Enhancement in Additively Manufactured Titanium Alloys via Neutral Element‐Mediated Microstructural Control

open access: yesRare Metals, Volume 45, Issue 8, August 2026.
ABSTRACT To overcome the challenges of the strength‐ductility trade‐off in laser additively manufactured (LAM) titanium alloys, and to avoid the intragranular microstructure degradation often caused by an exclusive focus on grain equiaxialization, this work proposes a novel strategy of “grain morphology‐intragranular microstructure co‐optimization ...

Precision Manufacturing of Patterned Beryllium Bronze Leaf Springs via Chemical Etching

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2018
Patterned leaf springs made of a beryllium bronze sheet are the key components of certain micro/nano contact probes. The accuracy of the probe is determined based on the precision of the formed pattern.

The skin-effect in ferromagnetic electrodes for wire-EDM [PDF]

open access: yesThe International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2004
In wire electrical discharge machining (wire-EDM) material is removed by the thermal energy of an electric spark that has been initiated between two electrodes (the wire and the workpiece), submerged in demineralised water. The use of high frequency current pulses for sparking leads to excellent machining performance, in terms of the work piece ...
