Microstructure‐Controlled Crack Propagation and Fracture Resistance in MoSiBTiC Alloy Revealed by Multiscale Extended Finite Element Method Modeling

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A two‐dimensional multiscale finite element analysis framework was established for the first‐generation MoSiBTiC alloy, and the mechanical and fracture‐related parameters of the constituent phases were calibrated through experiments and simulations. The framework provides a basis for analyzing crack propagation behavior in its complex microstructure ...

Slip Localization Intensification Mediated by Grain Boundary Sliding in a Polycrystalline Nickel‐Based Superalloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The temperature dependence of fatigue behavior in nickel‐based superalloys is investigated through high‐resolution measurements of plastic localization. While increasing temperature reduces localization and enhances fatigue performance in René 88DT, Inconel 718 exhibits a sharp degradation at intermediate temperature due to intensified slip ...

Effect of wire EDM conditions on generation of residual stresses in machining of aluminum 2014 T6 alloy

open access: yesAlexandria Engineering Journal, 2016
Wire electrical discharge machining (EDM) possesses many advantages over the conventional manufacturing process. Hence, this process was used for machining of all conductive materials; especially, nowadays this is the most common process for machining of

Influence of Scan Strategies in Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion on Solidification, Microstructure, and High‐Temperature Compressive Properties of γ′‐Strengthened Inconel 738LC

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Experiments and thermophysical simulations were conducted to investigate the electron beam powder bed fusion electron beam (PBF‐EB/M) process for the γ′‐strengthened nickel‐based superalloy Inconel 738LC. The results demonstrate the impact of process‐induced microstructural variations on high‐temperature mechanical behavior, providing a basis for ...

Influence of Machined Material Type to the Surface Roughness When Using Wire Electrical Discharge Machining [PDF]

open access: yesTransactions of the VŠB-Technical University of Ostrava, Mechanical Series, 2011
In the manufacturing process of complex components we use unconventional or progressive machining methods which can efficiently and with great precision achieve the desired result. We are talking about electro discharge/erosive machining.

An Attempt to Measure a Temperature Distribution of Wire on WIRE EDM.

open access: yesJournal of The Japan Society of Electrical Machining Engineers, 1994
A maximum cutting speed of WIRE EDM is restricted by a wire rupture during WIRE EDM. Normally it is said that too high machining speed supplies high temperature on the wire and causes the wire breaking. But it was difficult to measure the wire temperature during EDM because the wire is moving and surrounded by a workpiece material.

Additive‐Manufactured, Multifunctional Bioreactor Technology for Dynamic Culture of 3D Bioprinted Tissue Models

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
We introduce an additively manufactured bioreactor with a perfusion flow system and integrated temperature and pH sensors for skeletal muscle tissue biofabrication. The bioreactor's performance was evaluated by assessing the viability, spreading of the myoblast cells in a printed scaffold, and contraction of the isolated murine musculi interossei ...

Multi-response optimization for Nimonic alloy miniature gear fabrication using wire electrical discharge machining

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering, 2020
Generally, gear is an essential component in various electro-mechanical devices, but its manufacturing at the micro-level is challenging. The non-conventional manufacturing processes, such as electro-discharge machining (EDM), is suitable in gear ...

Evaluation of the Support Structure Removal Techniques for Additively Manufactured Ti6AL4V Parts

open access: yesAdvances in Materials Science and Engineering, 2022
Support structures are required for overhanging surfaces in additive manufacturing to prevent part deformation. However, these support structures are undesirable because they are removed during postprocessing after the part is built.

Experiments with Miniature Wire EDM for Silicon

open access: yesProcedia CIRP, 2020
Abstract Wire Electric Discharge Machining (WEDM) is being explored as an efficient alternative for cutting silicon wafers for photovoltaics. This is because WEDM results in lesser kerf loss as compared to traditional abrasive cutting techniques.
