Disentangling Multitrophic Interactions: How Vegetation Cover, Wild Boar, Deer, and Predators Shape Rodents Activity and Acorn Dispersal

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Vegetation cover promotes rodent activity and acorn dispersal, while wild boars exert a direct negative effect on mice. Conversely, deer and predators displayed no significant impact on rodent behavior. These results identify wild boars as the main disruptors of rodent‐mediated forest regeneration.

The geometrical origin of the strain-twist coupling in double helices [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The geometrical coupling between strain and twist in double helices is investigated. Overwinding, where strain leads to further winding, is shown to be a universal property for helices, which are stretched along their longitudinal axis when the initial ...

‘Escaping Isn't for Everyone’: Kurdish Smugglers’ Navigational Tactics at Checkpoints in Iran

open access: yesDevelopment and Change, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article examines how Kurdish smugglers navigate state and insurgent checkpoints in the borderlands of western Iran. Drawing on ethnographic research, it analyses two key navigational tactics: persin, a form of negotiated passage involving transaction, recognition and the contingent toleration of authority; and jimi, rendered here as ...

Wire rope mis-wrap due to wire rope “cut-in” on LEBUS drums

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu
The physical mechanism underlying wire rope cut-in in multilayer drums was experimentally investigated. Although the wire rope appears to be correctly spooled on the drum, hoisting the load can cut the spooling wire rope into multiple layers, leading to ...
