The authors treat the control of a chip refiner to produce wood pulp, where the incremental gain between the motor load and the plate gap is subject to sudden changes due to pad collapse. Passive adaptive control with fault detection, active suboptimal dual control, and dual-control solutions are discussed.

A 52 year old farmer was referred to us for investigation of suspected farmer's lung. For many years the farmer had been exposed to hay, straw, pigeons, and fuel chip dust. Under exertion he suffered from shortness of breath. In the farmer's own fuel chips we could identify Aspergillus fumigatus, Paecilomyces species and Mucor species.

Mutagenic compounds in wood-chip drying fumes
Mutation Research/Genetic Toxicology, 1990The mutagenicity of fumes from the heating of freshly cut spruce and birch chips was measured with Salmonella typhimurium strains TA98, TA100 and TA102. The bacteria were exposed directly and indirectly to the fumes. Wood chips were also extracted with solvents. No mutagenicity was found in wood extracts or the fume samples measured indirectly.

Trial shipments of wood chips to Europe in the mid 1970s opened a new market for southern pulpwood. These trials culminated in long-term chip supply agreements to Sweden and the development of port facilities to serve overseas markets on a continuing basis. In 1980, more than 424,000 oven-dry tons of wood chips were exported from southern ports.
