Shaping of Biohybrid Functional Living Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates a strategy for shaping living mycelium into functional materials by directing its natural growth. Nanoparticles armor hyphae, micron‐scale particles entangle within the network, and printed hydrogel architectures steer expansion, creating defined geometries.

Performance of Spray-Dried Nanofibrillated Cellulose as Wood Varnish Reinforcement in Outdoor Environment [PDF]

open access: yesBrazilian Archives of Biology and Technology
The outdoor use of wood can be improved by coating the wood surface with varnish to reduce the effects of natural weathering. However, some varnishes quickly lose their ability to protect wood, and nanoscale additives have been used to mitigate this ...

Pine wilt disease: detection of the pinewood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) as a tool for a pine breeding programme [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The pinewood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, is a serious quarantine pest first detected in Portugal and Europe in 1999. It is the causal agent of pine wilt disease (PWD).

Evaluation of Naturally Grown Termite Resistant Tropical Wood Species

open access: yesAsian Journal of Environment & Ecology
Selecting termite resistant wood species for household and construction purposes can guarantee their durability and reduce the pressure on forest resources. The objective of this study was to evaluate the resistance of selected tropical wood species to termite attacks in a natural environment.

Single‐ and Dual‐Atom Configurations in Atomically Dispersed Catalysts for Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Single‐atom and dual‐atom‐based atomically dispersed catalysts (ADCs) effectively address the shuttle effect and sluggish redox kinetics in Li–S batteries. With nearly 100% atomic utilization and tunable coordination environments, ADCs enhance LiPSs adsorption, lower conversion barriers, and accelerate sulfur redox reactions.

Impregnant formulation to the preservation, protection and consolidation of wood heritage assets [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The protection of cultural heritage is an integral part of the world´s material wealth. The cultural heritage, movable and immovable, together with the natural environment, represents values that contribute to the education and social culture of the ...

Silicified Wood‐Inspired, High‐Strength Fire‐Resistant Chitin‐Based Aerogels for Sustainable High‐Temperature Thermal Insulation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by natural silicified wood, a biomimetic mineralized chitin‐derived aerogel is constructed. It can withstand 81 000 times its own weight, and its backside temperature is 130.4°C after exposure to ∼1300°C butane flame for 600 s, exhibiting high‐strength, fire‐resistance, and super thermal‐insulation properties.

Machine Learning‐Assisted Inverse Design of Soft and Multifunctional Hybrid Liquid Metal Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A machine learning framework is presented for inverse design of synthesizable multifunctional composites containing both liquid metal and solid inclusions. By integrating physics‐based modeling, data‐driven prediction, and Bayesian optimization, the approach enables intelligent design of experiments to identify optimal compositions and realize these ...

Microbial growths and checking on acrylic painted tropical woods and their static bending after three years of natural weathering

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology, 2019
Wood products exposed outdoor could be weathered, especially in the tropical region with high in sun light, temperature, rain intensity, and relative humidity.

Wood Quality of Ten-Year-Old Sentang (Azadirachta Excelsa) Grown from Seedlings and Rooted Cuttings [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Seeds of sentang were exhibit recalcitrant and cannot be stored for a long period of time. So efforts have been made to propagate this species vegetatively via rooted cuttings technique. It is envisaged that for the technique to be deemed successful, the
