Wood Treatments and Interfacial Bonding in Wood-Plastic Composites

2021
This chapter presents an overview of different physical, chemical and biological methods used to improve the mechanical and thermal properties of wood and wood plastic composites. The physical methods addressed contemplate plasma, corona, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, ultrasound, heat treatments, fibre beating and electron radiation. The chemical methods

Wood plastic composite using graphene nanoplatelets

International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, 2013
This article presents the preparation and characterization of wood flour/polypropylene (PP) composites filled with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs). The effects of GNPs, as reinforcing agent, on the mechanical and physical properties were also investigated.

Chemical Corrosion Effect on Wood and Wood–Plastic Composites

Polymer-Plastics Technology and Engineering, 1993
Abstract Effect of chemical corrosion on the tensile strengths of five types of Bangladeshi timbers (kadom, simul, koroi, mango, and debdaro) and their composites has been evaluated. Wood–plastic composites (WPC) formed by the gamma-radiation induction polymerization of butylmethacrylate (BMA) with those timbers show better resistance to chemical ...

Swelling and Thermal Conductivity of Wood and Wood-Plastic Composite

Polymer-Plastics Technology and Engineering, 1997
Wood-plastic composites (WPCs) were prepared with low-grade wood (simul and mango) using methylmethacrylate (MMA) and butylmethacrylate (BMA) as the impregnating monomers under high-energy ionizing radiation from a Co-60 gamma source. Water absorption of both wood and WPC was studied in a stagnant water bed.

Swelling Behavior of Wood and Wood-Plastic Composite (WPC)

Polymer-Plastics Technology and Engineering, 1992
Abstract Wood-plastic composites were prepared by γ-radiation with five types of low-grade timbers of Bangladesh using methylmethacrylate as monomer. Water-swelling behavior of both wood and its WPC was studied. The water uptake by the WPC was found to be lower compared to the untreated wood.

Enhanced wood plastic composites

2013
In the study, two wood fibre types, bleached softwood kraft pulp (BSKP) and thermomechanical pulp (TMP) with fibre lengths of 2.28 and 1.40 mm, respectively, were melt processed with poly(lactic acid) (PLA) using a twin-screw extruder to fibre content of 30 wt-% and injection moulded.

Wood-plastic composites using woods native to Iran

Radiation Physics and Chemistry (1977), 1982
Abstract Radiation induced polymerization of methylmethacrylate and copolymerization of styrene-acrylonitrile mixture in mamrase Carpinus betulus was carried out by means of γ-ray, under different moisture levels and additives. Under all conditions the degree of polymerization was as high as 60%.

Wood–plastic composites as promising green-composites for automotive industries!

Bioresource Technology, 2008
Wood-plastic composite (WPC) is a very promising and sustainable green material to achieve durability without using toxic chemicals. The term WPCs refers to any composites that contain plant fiber and thermosets or thermoplastics. In comparison to other fibrous materials, plant fibers are in general suitable to reinforce plastics due to relative high ...
