Load-Carrying Capacity and Stiffness of Softwood Wooden Dowel Connections
International Journal of Architectural Heritage, 2018Historically, wooden peg connections have been widely used in timber joints, particularly during the Middle Ages, and the use of these wooden connections is becoming popular again.

Experimental and theoretical study on horizontal flame spread through arrays of wooden dowels
Fire and Materials, 2022AbstractFlame spread along discrete fuel element is of great interest for both fundamental science and fire prevention, whose combustion properties may be different from those of homogenous materials. It has been a long time for researchers in fire science to find a simple and effective method to construct a discrete flame spread model.

Flame Spread Through Wooden Dowels
2014In practical applications, flammable materials are often arranged in arrays of discrete objects whose combustion properties may be different as that of a homogeneous material. In this study, the influence of spacing between arrays of wooden dowels on the rate of upward flame spread through arrays has been studied.

The combustion of wooden dowels in heated air
Symposium (International) on Combustion, 1965A mathematical model is presented for the combustion of small wooden dowels heated externally. The heat transfer is described by the Fourier conduction equation, including a heat-source term, with both convection and radiation at the surface. The decomposition is assumed to follow a first-order Arrhenius equation.

AUTOMATION OF HEAT TRANSFER IN WOODEN RAFTERS WITH DOWELS USING LAPLACE METHOD

Improvement of glued-in-rod joint system using compressed wooden dowel
Holzforschung, 2010Abstract The purpose of this study was to develop eco-friendly and high-performance glued-in-rod (GIR) joints using compressed wood (CW), which has higher tensile strength than normal hardwood, instead of conventional wooden dowels. To explore the bonding performance of the dowel and base material, punching shear tests were performed and ...

Flame spread and burning rates through vertical arrays of wooden dowels
Proceedings of the Combustion Institute, 2019Abstract Fuel loads in real-world fire scenarios often feature discrete elements, discontinuities, or inhomogeneities; however, most models for flame spread only assume a continuous, homogeneous fuel. Because discrete fuels represent a realistic scenario not yet well-modeled, it is of interest to find simple methods to model fire growth first in ...

Interfacial shear strength of wood–plastic composites: a new pullout method using wooden dowels
Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology, 2005This preliminary study examined the relationship of interfacial shear strength (IFSS) to modulus of rupture (MOR) for several different wood–plastic composites (WPCs). Plastics utilized were high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP). Pine and oak were used as the wood species.

Laboratory Studies on the Generation of Firebrands from Cylindrical Wooden Dowels
2016Wildland urban interface (WUI) fires are increasing in size and severity in the United States. These fires are a major concern because they spread into communities and ignite thousands of homes every year. The main source of home ignitions is not through direct flame contact or radiation; rather, firebrands are the primary pathway for fire to spread ...
