Investigating the threat to Sitka spruce from Ips typographus: discrimination and colonization of Britain's principal commercial conifer by a damaging forest pest

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
The forest pest Ips typographus was found to demonstrate attraction to Sitka spruce, and to colonize and breed upon cut logs as successfully as its primary host Norway spruce. This has implications for the beetle's establishment and impact in Sitka‐growing regions, including Britain where I.

On the Origins of Out‐of‐Plane Auxetic Response in Paper

open access: yesphysica status solidi (b), EarlyView.
Paper can be auxetic! Paper can exhibit a range of out‐of‐plane Poisson's ratio (PR) values. Examining handsheets made from hardwood (HW) and softwood (SW) fibers, of a variety of weights (1, 3, or 5 g) and refining degrees (none, R, or R+), showed that the sign and magnitude of PR can be finely controlled by modifying network parameters.

Too‐stable North Atlantic climate system in CMIP6 experiments undermines precipitation projections in Europe

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
An original method is applied to identify distinct periods of observed NAO spatial patterns, evaluating the ability of state‐of‐the‐art climate models to reproduce them. Their poor representation of this multidecadal variability increases uncertainty in winter precipitation projections for Europe and likely broad regions of the Northern Hemisphere ...

Observations of a frontal–trough merger over a wildfire, Queensland, Australia

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Observations are presented of the meteorology of a frontal–trough merger in subtropical Australia which impacted a wildfire. An elevated nocturnal mixed layer above approx. 2500 m with increasing moisture with height was identified as the source of instability that resulted in the formation of elevated storms along a 300‐km frontal–trough boundary ...

Weather features drive free‐tropospheric baroclinicity variability in the North Atlantic storm track

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
We show that synoptic weather features, such as extratropical cyclones, fronts, and atmospheric rivers, contribute to more than half of the total variability of free‐tropospheric baroclinicity in the North Atlantic storm track, despite their limited spatial and temporal extent.
