Word recognition with masking [PDF]
At illuminances between .07 and 17 ft.-c, the word-recognition threshold was lower when a common word was preceded and followed by a homogenous field than by a noise pattern composed of a random array of bits of letters. Most of the difference is ascribed to the pattern’s interference with post-stimulatory processes.

White Christian Nationalism: Adult Education and Threats to Democracy

The scene superiority effect: object recognition in the context of natural scenes [PDF]
Four experiments investigate the effect of background scene semantics on object recognition. Although past research has found that semantically consistent scene backgrounds can facilitate recognition of a target object, these claims have been challenged

Processes in word recognition [PDF]
Abstract Five hypotheses were proposed and tested to account for Reicher's (1968) finding that recognition of letters is more accurate in the context of a meaningful word than alone, even with redundancy controlled by a forced-choice design. All five hypotheses were rejected on the basis of the experimental results. Performance on the forced-choice

Adult Education Confronting White Christian Nationalism: A Thematic Analysis
ABSTRACT As a way to conclude, this article elaborates key themes that emerged from the collected articles in this volume. Each article carries its own important message about the role of adult education in confronting White Christian nationalism, while here, Prins and Carr‐Chellman offer a thematic interpretation of the volume as a whole. These themes

ABSTRACT Since the January 2021 attack on the US Capitol, the influence of White Christian nationalism (WCN) has become even more pronounced and concerning. Adult educators and the public need a better understanding of whether and how WCN can be unlearned, and the roles ordinary citizens and adult educators can play in this process.

Optimal Viewing Position in Face Recognition
The existence of an optimal viewing position (OVP) in visual word recognition has been consistently reported. For English words, the best recognition performance is usually obtained when the initial fixation is directed to the left of the word center ...

Abstract Purpose Sparing pharyngeal constrictor muscles (PCMs) during radiotherapy improves patient‐reported swallowing function. This study aimed to explore the feasibility of integrating knowledge‐based planning (KBP) with multicriteria optimization (MCO) in Eclipse v18.0 to selectively spare PCM, quantify the required trade‐off in prophylactic ...

Precision‐Optimised Post‐Stroke Prognoses
ABSTRACT Background Current medicine cannot confidently predict who will recover from post‐stroke impairments. Researchers have sought to bridge this gap by treating the post‐stroke prognostic problem as a machine learning problem, reporting prediction error metrics across samples of patients whose outcomes are known.

Word Recognition with Deep Conditional Random Fields
Recognition of handwritten words continues to be an important problem in document analysis and recognition. Existing approaches extract hand-engineered features from word images--which can perform poorly with new data sets.
